I keep banging the “USAID was good and we must confront the obscene wave of death MAGA’s destruction of it unleashed” drum because I *desperately* want Democrats and the Left to prioritize rebuilding global aid. We should rebuild it better, but we can’t just let Musk’s global massacre continue.

America has proven we are not reliable enough to be trusted to administer a global aid system. We should give the money to the UN or something and let them distribute it. We will use it for military purposes, and we will take it away for no reason.

Yet another reason why fighting bigotry is the great mission of our time. Not just against MAGAs; the subtle belief that those dead foreigners aren't as important is why people on our side aren't horrified by the aftermath of USAID. We all need a big refocus on others.

A "respectable" newspaper where I live (far away in Estonia) just repeated the far-right claims that it was just "deep state propaganda" treating people in need in other countries as either not real or getting real aid, as if everything exists only to build political influence at home. It's horrible

I think one of the things that stumps many people is that while USAID had the budget of a medium sized country, it was a fraction of a rounding error for the US. When some of these people go “well other countries can do it better” the truth is they literally can’t. And it basically cost us nothing.

And right now, I really just don’t see anywhere near as much interest or passion as I’d like among Democrats and the Left in rebuilding a better, more equitable global aid and human rights protection system that can use our vast US wealth to save and improve lives.

I agree it's essential. But it's hard to be passionate about every one of the huge number of systems we need to rebuild...I keep reminding myself that this is the Reagan administration x 10,000, and if we don't work our asses off we'll still be digging our way out in 40 years.

So yes, this is why I’m really annoying about USAID on here: I spend a lot of time talking to people who are dealing with the direct, horrifying human fallout of the current aid funding crisis that Musk and Trump intentionally created, and it keeps me up at night.

I'm hoping that the plan is to get elected first and then pivot to international relations. Trust me as a Canadian we are not impressed with the general mushiness of the tariff pushback among all American politicians.

USAID is just one part of a long term project. All the foreign students will not be coming back once this is over. To rebuild our higher education system as a light that draws the best from everywhere we are going to have to invest in multiple foreign aid paths this admin destroyed.

Education is just one small part of rebuilding our image in the world. Putting resources in truly embracing the world as integrated and that we are the place where the world is welcomed economically, culturally and thru education should be our priority. Selfish reasons as well as selfless ones.

It always disappointed me that Democrats didn't take George W. Bush's accomplishments with PEPFAR and say, "This is a model of what we could do more of, at even larger scale."

Even if we ignore morality (and we should *not*), USAID provided tremendous soft power and good will to the U.S. Even if we were a completely self-interested country (and we shouldn't be), it would still be smart to not only rebuild but expand our global aid.

Was just trying to explain to my gf’s sister last week why defunding USAID has cost so many lives. Mostly I was spluttering. I felt I should have been better informed.

How willingly will countries accept aid, when they'll know that it will be eliminated the instant republicans gain control of the White House or both houses of Congress? We're untrustworthy.
