Captain Future, The wonderful adventures of Nils, Pinocchio.
But i didn't know it was anime back then. I just thought it was cartoons.
The first anime I knew was anime was Sailor Moon i think.
Those nights when I didn't have school the next day.
And I was allowed to stay up late and watch the sci-fi channel on the big TV.
That's what done it for me.
I was a little kid in the seventies (LATE seventies) when 'Battle of the Planets' (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman) and 'Star Blazers' (Space Battlecruiser Yamoto) aired in the US.
Mind. Blown.
My dad showed me Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) as a kid, which sparked the first bit of interest. As I grew, I really liked the aesthetics and art style of anime, and wanted to check it out myself after seeing it everywhere
Fuck too much to list: Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon, Gigantor, Cyborg 009, Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman, ThunderCats, DragonBall, anything Sci-Fi channel or Cartoon Network/Toonami put on from 1997 to 2005.
No fucking clue, there was literally an anime channel in the late 90's-2000's in Chile so i always watched it, it was no different for me than watching any cartoon
The world building was so amazing to me, especially combined with this sort of high school drama. Loved the bug people, the magic, the advanced tech combined with medieval societies. Also still hilarious, like how their teacher gains super powers through sobriety
Hilariously, I'd say my first anime was actually Gigantor when I had to wake up at like 6am to catch a bus in grade school.
Though to be more realistically it was more like Slayers and Trigun when I binged stuff on Netflix
I watched DBZ from start to finish on Toonami. Remember vividly excitedly getting home after school for the penultimate episode when Goku uses the spirit bomb on Kid Buu.
My first pirated anime was Naruto when I got tired of waiting for the Chuunin exam arc to air weekly
It was the most impressive animation I had ever seen up to that point, even if the version I saw was edited for english audiences. Gave me goosebumps. I saw the real version shortly after.
Sailor Moon when I didn't know what anime was, and all the stuff on Toonami like Gundam Wing, DBZ, Pilot Candidate, Tenshi Muyo...ahh those were the days.
I'm not a big anime person, I prefer manga. But I've learnt to appreciate the medium with Ouran High School Host Club. The manga was good, but the anime uses its medium really well.
