1/ I suspect we are days away from hearing Elon is "using AI" to “streamline” benefits programs. You should know why fully automating decisions about who gets critical assistance is a terrible idea that will have disastrous consequences. A 🧵 based on work I’ve done with the great @awhf.bsky.social

2/ AI tools can help long-understaffed and underfunded agencies quickly process lots of data and respond with greater speed to the needs of constituents. BUT careless & punitive design and implementation of these tools have often prevented benefits from reaching the people they’re intended to help.

Does anyone still think that they have the best interests of the country in mind here? AI, really?? It's a takeover. I expect that there's also an external team that is seeing/modifying this code as well. These guys are the young expendable meat.

Yes, absolutely. Some behavior that is flagged as suspicious by these programs is just how lower income people tend to have different patterns of usage vs those with higher incomes - which is why equity analysis is important! Thread here: bsky.app/profile/jess...

I think it’s highly likely that - if there is any actual attempt to root out fraud vs just line item veto things he doesn’t like - Musk and DOGE will flag a lot of valid user actions as fraudulent simply because they don’t actually think about the types of users that govt benefit programs serve.
