This is your regularly scheduled and apparently necessary reminder that SteamOS is Linux. SteamOS is built from Arch Linux. The Steam Deck runs Linux. So will the Steam Machine and Steam Frame.

This will likely be how most devs will provide Linux support for quite sometime, until Linux market share on steam reaches about 15% or so. A similar thing is happening in EV's right now. Regions where adoption reaches above a certain threshold start building out infrastructure.

shh don't tell them or they might start making sure it only works on steamos on steamdeck and not linux on pc

To people who know nothing other than windows and mac, and never known open source can get confused by this. It's a never ending battle to twach the masses about how Linux works.

Honest question from a non-dev: if that's the case, why make the distinction tho? Isn't it actually harder to just include certain configurations of a very specific distro?

To me it could be interpreted in two different ways; either they mean that they only made the windows version and it's running fine on steamos because of proton, OR they made a Linux build that works on SteamOS but don't want to support other configs. I still don't know which it is.

Their response is bad because it's contradictory in a general language way. In the same way it's common but technically incorrect to say "mammals don't lay eggs".

Yeah, they just should’ve phrased it more like “support for Linux has been validated for SteamOS, compatibility with other distributions may vary.”

This is a completely valid response, can't expect them to offer support for every weird distro. So long as the game doesn't self-sabotage if it doesn't detect "steamos" or other strings not present on other distros, I don't mind it "not being supported". (yes, there are games that do this)

absolutely, i wouldn’t expect any developer to ever truly support every flavour of linux. they should say that instead, tbh. could you imagine a dedicated team just for fedora forza players?

Eh, you can't really expect them to state support for every distro, and it would be a bad idea for them to blanketly state compatibility that is highly variable depending on hardware and software configurations. If you're a Linux gamer, you know what SteamOS compatibility means.

I kinda get where you're coming from but supporting steamOS is supporting one of the hardest distros to put games on. Debian makes it way easier than Arch. So if they can drive it to steamOS, then getting it running debian should be far easier. I just think they're ignorant which is fixable.

I see someone has jumped in already but as someone who routinely uses both arch and Debian: This is the whole point of the steam Linux runtime, which is finally not total shit since 3.0.

It's no so hard to say something like: "Unfortunately, we can only provide support for Windows 10/11 and SteamOS configurations."

The name seems to imply this person is a community manager, which probably wasn't informed that SteamOS is a flavor of Linux. Or they thought someone was trying to run it on a Linux distro that was not SteamOS based. There's multiple ways to interpret the question.
