People let cats outside and are genuinely surprised when they never see them again. That's life. If you want to keep them, don't let them out.

Why? The coyote is just making a living and maybe you're dooming a litter of pups to die when you potshot their parents. Maybe, I dunno, keep your pets indoors and let the coyotes continue to do their thing as they've done for millions of years?

I’m not against your post but I live in an area that’s very suburban and the population has exploded. You can’t shoot them here but I’d like to.

The population explodes because people leave their pets, pet food, and garbage out where the coyotes can get it. Expanded food supply means expanded populations, that's just biology 101 and you can't fight it. People need to clean up and be aware of how they impact their environment.

It depends upon where you live and what the cat is like. Personally, I would rather have a shorter, interesting and free life than a long, boring life in a comfy prison.

Domestic cats are not native to any area so they are an invasive animal responsible for killing untold 100,000’s of birds and other small animals and putting bells on them doesn’t stop this also bells don’t stop cars keep your cats inside

We're in a rural county area. The developer eliminated most of the vegetation, so there are few outposts for birds of prey. As such, cats here are an absolute necessity to tamp down rodent population. Although I agree that cats are little murderers.

Not just about cats' safety. They're a blight on ecosystems if you let them outside. I love cats, but they're pretty sadistic. They kill and mutilate prey for fun; doesn't matter how they're fed at home. Give them a bell and/or neon, reflective collar to alert other animals, at least.

I had a cat who I got at 6 weeks. She lived to be 23 years, and 4 months. She was indoor/outdoor. I always made sure she was inside at night. She spent 2 nights out in her entire life. One by mistake. It depends on where you live, and how close the cat stays to it's home.

I live in a place where you might find a coyote or alligator in your backyard at any given time. My cat’s oncologist said that here in our county, the life expectancy for an outdoor cat is ~2 years due to disease and predators.

That is very true .. which is why over here .. I remember people were asked to not let them out early dawn . Let's not have arguments ... cats are great companions ... but they can be very hard on bird life . I no longer feed birds in my garden .

In Oz cats have no natural predators. I drove to Cygnet Bay from Broome WA, really remote you have no idea. 150k into the dirt road drive - a moggy just walks out of the bush in front of my car No houses for 10s and 10s and 10s of km. It looked well fed Here they are a feral pest. Everywhere

A lot of cat owners don’t realise that their cats can be killed by other predators, depending on where one lives, or simply by being hit by cars. Keeping cats indoors with a catio is a safer option for them.

What do you think your cat does when it goes outside? It doesn't stay in your yard, it becomes a nuisance for every neighbour nearby. You can't let your dog run, and dogs don't eat birds. I'm so fed up with irresponsible pet owners.

We had a Siamese ('Cleo') cat for about 15 years when I was growing up, and she was an inside/outside cat for the most part. I feel that if they don't come home, it might be that they found more acceptable lodgings. Cats are picky.

Live on a farm very rurally. We’ve had literally dozens and dozens of cats show up. We clean them up, heal them up & get them fixed. All of them have been indoor/outdoor cats. All live a full, fun, pampered life and enjoy cat lives. Hunt, etc.

Some people say they are "meant to be outdoors." They're not "meant" to be anything, they are the result of our domestication. And they are just fine indoors and/or lounging in the sun on a protected balcony.

Sensing a lot of hostility for cats here. How about we go after the doctors who charge outrageous amounts of money to fix them. I have a stray momma and 3 of her girls in the house because I can't afford to fix them. Shelter is jam full of cats and I can't find them homes.

You know that anesthesia, bloodwork and the vet's time all cost money, right? Why should the vets be forced to donate their time and materials to make up for the shit owners who won't take responsibility for their animals?

Fully aware that it costs them money. My mom worked for a vet for years! I know the cost, in more ways than one. But when they preach about fixing your pets, then help out a little. And pet owners? Yes, there are many irresponsible owners. There are also good people trying to do the right thing.

We have a local cat that always comes to our porch and found it with 5 ticks all over its face yesterday morning. Pisses me off but there's little we can do about it as we have 3 cats of our own...

Ticks are extremely bad this year already as we had an unnaturally warm winter. It's not going to get any better and enough ticks at once can kill a smallish animal like a cat in a short period of time. Plus, disease risk. Better to keep the cats indoors.

Was woken up at 3AM a few years ago by a cacophony in the backyard that I thought was a cat fight, went outside to spray them w a hose and witnessed the final moments of a coyote killing & eating a collared cat In a pretty dense part of the city no less And missing cat signs are common round here

When I adopted my cat in Sept. they specifically asked me if I was going to let him outside. I said no. Not sure if they would have given him to me if my response was yes.

I say things to my little door dasher, Sasha, like "making a break for it?" "sick of hanging out with this old man?" "you gotta be quicker than that" "nope honey, you're stuck with me" If I let her out, she's not coming back. Haha.

My cost was very low DIY no labor costs. 4x4's and 2" welded wire with some outdoor carpet remnants. I built my first catio with 2x2's and was cheaper and worked well. No plan just get at it.

I rescued friendly feral cats. I got a big backyard on a lake a big fence and a catio. They stay put. My other ones were taken out on leads when adopted as kittens. Never left my yard when free. It was their territory. If a cat has never been outside & escapes they will run and not be found.

On my way to work each morning i pass a house who lets their cats roam freely, and every single year i see one dead in the road in front of their house! Just two weeks ago i seen a sweet young orange cat dead on the side of the road. It breaks my heart to witness these avoidable deaths.

Males are especially known to wander. When I find them dead, they are not eaten. If they'd stick to rodents, I'd suffer them more. But killing song birds will get them shot. They displace Ring Tail Cats, snakes and other native species. Keep them in.

We have 3 cats that stay in our yard's vicinity. They all disappeared overnight...once, no doubt testing their freedom and checking out the world. But, we have a large yard, lots of trees and bushes to play in. And they come when their names are called.

Just before dawn I heard that terrible sound of a screaming cat. It was quick. My guess is a great horned owl was wrapping up the night.
