You don’t turn off transponder because that’s the easy way to find and deconflict planes. The only reason to do this in this case is avoiding internet sleuthing.

Is it dangerous? That is probably too strong a word. But it does slightly increase risk to nearby aircraft, and to investigation if God forbid there were an accident. Most accidents are a combination of risks/errors, not just one thing. Which is why aviation systems and regulations are so strict.
