This is a nationwide phenomenon. The centrists and normies are more viciously angry than the socialists and anarchists, who gave up long ago on the illusion of a working system. Would encourage leftists of all stripes to take it seriously, welcome them in while they’re receptive.

Walking thru the “Ultra Normie” No Kings rally in my extremely rural, white town and there are Patagonia wearing moms carrying signs that say “DEAD PEDOPHILES DONT REOFFEND” and “ICE GETS THE WALL” and I hi fived an old guy with a sign that said MY DADDY FOUGHT NAZIS AND SO WILL I” this is wild

The gentleman holding the "detain pedophiles, not children" sign is 98 years old. He reached out to organizers on FB to ask someone to give him a ride to the event. It's really something. This community is very red.

Yessss this is so true, and I’m often surprised by the issue that ultimately proves to be the proverbial straw for someone. So yes, I’m annoying, and I don’t like the depressing topics either, but I’ll keep talking about all the injustices because you never know what strikes someone nerves. Lol

I and quite a few other ex-Republicans have a bottomless well of righteous rage toward the current regime. It's political and moral horror mixed with personal betrayals and shame for past complicity. I hope we can be useful.

100%. This is NOT a diss on anarchists, who have been doing good and have been right about so so much. This is just a gentle reminder to welcome in the slow to understand (myself included).

Acute targeted rage vs. continual underlying anger. We have to remember that the normies still think that this is all just because of a few people or even just Trump. The lefties are mad bc we could "go back to normal" and lose ~80% of these people. I hope they're wrong but history shows otherwise

"We used to be able to have debate" "I had friends that were Republicans" "I'm proud to be an American, just not right now" (Or the infamous classic): "If Kamala won, we'd be at brunch" Being reactionary is not exclusive to the American right and it's a real barrier to progress.

If it wasn’t clear, this is not an endorsement of centrism/centrist Dems. Nor is saying they are more viciously angry a value judgment. It’s probably just because centrists have a more carceral mindset and feel more recently betrayed. Hence the opportunity to welcome them to go further. ✌️

I think a lot about this moment during the Jerry Rescue in Syracuse in 1851. This local rich guy had been persistently antagonistic to abolitionists. He was like, “Yeah slavery is wrong, but asking for immediate emancipation is too radical, and you guys are a bunch of hysterical lunatics.” …

Then he saw Jerry, a self-emancipated neighbor, getting beaten by cops and taken to jail. Jerry was gonna be sent back South the next day. The rich guy saw all the abolitionists rioting, trying to get Jerry out, and he became a radical abolitionist on the spot.

What did the people who’d been right all along do? They didn’t lecture him (or if they did, they didn’t record it for history). They said, “Great. We’re hiding Jerry at your house, because the cops’ll never suspect you!” And they did. They hid Jerry there for four days and then got him to Canada.

The statue of the Jerry Rescue shows Jerry, Rev. Jermain Wesley Loguen and Samuel May — two of those radical abolitionists who’d been right all along. I know the rich guy’s name but I’m not putting it here bc his change of heart is not the point of the story. The open, collective action is.
