If you haven’t heard about it yet, the youths are super into IRL human interactions, no AI, and “physical media” (vinyl! DVDs! tapes!) right now and it’s glorious. Like there are 20yo influencers that just read old paper books and talk about feelings.

This weekend I gave a presentation to a group of mostly college-aged folks and had a little line at the beginning of my slides that described it as an "AI-free presentation made by a human, for humans" and I had to pause for clapping at that part you love to see it

I’m a confirmed AI hater & skeptic of much modern tech, but uggghh: film cameras, no thanks! Having suffered with those growing up, I think digital cameras are one of the greatest inventions in history. (And vinyl records, too, ha ha - they sucked!)

Quick followup to my fountain pen "old school" suggestion. Pilot makes lots of fountain pen options including multi-packs under $3 each. Also jetpens.com has lots of cool stuff. For most 1 bottle of ink lasts more than a year. Also fountain pen meetups are everywhere! My DM's are open for questions.

There is a certain *presence* that comes from handling a piece of history. Like a used book or even an old tool. Besides, I remember kicking one book down the stairs, stomping it viciously in the hall, until booting it out the front door. S a t i s f a c t i o n, and cheaper than a new Kindle...

yeah I am a history enjoyer also, but the youths are buying *new* vinyl and *new* zines too, because it is something you own not rent and it can’t be tracked by algos. It is more a freedom thing than a collector thing

Unless you pay 💲cash💲, your 💩is tracked. All the cashiers think I have no phone, eMail, or street address. Having worked on a few *zines* in my day - a 'reproduction' is antithetical to our purpose. And buying *new* insensitive to humanity. So if that is the 'trend', they will mature no better🤡

I'm a high school teacher, and I am already seeing my teenage students souring on AI, which is amazing. They aren't stupid and they see right through its shit.

There's a reason why a Zoomer (me) built the first starter pack of newsrooms that don't use Generative AI! Many People are talking about it! bsky.app/profile/alex...

Behold: the first-ever list of news outlets that have banned generative AI in their reporting. As of today, this is literally information that you cannot find on Google. My goal is to fill the starter pack, so please send over suggestions with supporting evidence! go.bsky.app/8cn1XfT

It's not just the youth. I came of age in an analog world & entered the digital one in the early 90s as a young teen. I've experienced both & want more analog back. I'm resentful of being herded down the digital paths laid for us. I'm angry that functioning in society requires Internet access.

I agree & it's not just young people. I'm 49 & one of the few subs I allow myself is b/c I get a physical quarterly magazine delivered to my house. If I could afford more, I would! My wife handwrites & mails letters to distant family. We got a landline phone again. Humans crave the analog world!

Starting to be glad I still have a VCR, 2 Walkmans, Portable CD player, regular CD player, cassette tapes, and DVDs. Yes, I was born before any of them existed.

When I was a kid, I picked up a copy of War and Peace at a library sale for a dime, and the librarian said, "I was wondering who was going to buy that." Weirdly, I still haven't read it...

I read both War and Peace (good read, actually, if awfully Russian) and Infinite Jest (I could see it as more aggravating than enjoyable for some readers, but I liked the linguistic pyrotechnics & ridiculous/genius footnotes enough to read it a second time). I don't recommend 2x for either tho 😅
