Does the Governor, elected representatives of MN not control the police? As a non-Smerican this always confuses me. The Gov and other senators and such from MN are in support of the protest, the police are not. Who controls the state police in US?

In most cities they control themselves as a largely autonomous force. Laws only count as enforced, and the appearance that they aren't autonomous is mostly maintained by a careful agreement by mayors to not ask them to do anything they don't already want to.

Yup, because in his bsky profile he is taking a very anti-ICE stance, but not acting as such. Weird. Once again, a very confused non-American observer, I remain.

Exactly. And that is why we are baffled, ha. Again, it’s almost impossible to make sense of considering who we know is ultimately in charge and how vast their stances differ. I just don’t get it, so I don’t blame the other person for being confused in the slightest

Thanks again for answering my query, much appreciated. We have horrible police too, but they mostly follow the state-party-line. So, we can predict which protest would be violently suppressed, and which ones escorted to safety. Police aren't this independent and chaotic here. Orderly-ACAB.

The governor does oversee and appoint people to head the DPS, aka who oversees the state police or “state patrol”. It’s a branch of the DPS, but yeah, I don’t blame you for being confused because it’s confusing. When governors are against it and the head of the DPS apparently isn’t, there’s a prob

Thanks. But, even your mayor is publicly against ICE, thus he should be pro-protest. So the DPS can go against the state's Governor and the city's mayor and declare his own political stance? Either of them cannot override this order?
