metroid ii: return of samus. that’s a five star game right there. total classic. kinda can’t believe how overlooked it is in the culture. run, don’t walk, to your local gameboy emulator or fpga device

I also think this even though I got pissed off last year when I played it and ran out of missiles in one of the last areas lol

I think I agree! the vibes are impeccable. to, it manages to evoke the scene in Alien when they investigate the crashed ship and discover the alien egg. the Metroid franchise is heavily influenced by Alien but no other game gets close to that particular feeling, which is one of the best parts imo

Its like a genuine crime how genuinely great metroid ii is and how subsequently willing people are to write it off simply for being a gameboy game

it so is! I was just championing it the other day and a handful of nerds just had to pop in to tell me it looks bad and it's not fun 🤦🏻‍♀️ bsky.app/profile/audr...

nooo metroid 2 is way better than return of samus. the remake may go down easier, but it also killed the atmosphere and mood, especially with the ending. plus it's ugly as fuck while metroid 2 looks like this

Yeaaaa, that sounds about right;; lol I think a lot of folks have this odd idea about "old games" where they just assume that theyre all fundamentally incompatible with modern design sensibilities but like... those ideas had to come from somewhere, yknow;;?

I think a lot of it just comes down to how its presented; the form factor of the Gameboy is unfamiliar to most ppl nowadays and is therefore intimidating. But, its honestly just a very fun and interesting game! Its just not something a lot of folks have seen before

My partner played it for like 5 minutes to get the NSO profile icons, then handed me the controller like "hey check it out, this kinda has the sauce." She left and came back 4 hours later to find that I'm *still* playing it, completely engrossed now. Great sauce indeed.

One of the weirdest things about AM2R is that it originally wasn't "this unplayable old game needs a remake" but "Metroid 2 deserved a DX version too." Somehow of all the fan projects working on that, AM2R was what we got. The narrative shifted to fit the game and changing preferences.

I think you're overlooking Pokémon here, plenty of people do not mind playing the original Gameboy games (I'm also gonna include Gen 2 in here bc the GBC isn't that different from the GB). For a while also Link's Awakening but the Switch remake completely changed that.

think it's really interesting to consider a world where metroidvanias took off with that as the base inspiration instead, with multiple smaller areas with several upgrades in them and no map. Prime 2 is the closest to this I think and it rips

This is how I discovered emulators. My bestie had a physical copy and let me play it, and I craved more and sought out a let’s play in the before times of Youtube. And I noticed the guy playing stuff kept opening menus so I found out about Emulators. My first clear tho was that fren’s physical copy

I've played Metroid 2 until the very end, I couldn't get past the Metroid Queen after too many tries. But I love the remake (first game I ever got on release) and apparently that's not common is what I'm learning under this post

lmao i think both remakes are very popular in their own right as action games, my followers just tend to be the kind of nerds who will value the unique atmosphere of a game boy game

I will at least say that playing it definitely felt good, unlike my first 3-4 times playing the NES game and that Samus Returns doesn't keep that atmosphere at all but I still love what it did overall
