Still Life with Chair Caning (1912) is a parade of impostors: oilcloth fakes the woven cane seat, rope imitates a carved frame, and three painted letters, JOU, stand in for a newspaper. Picasso brought shop-bought material into fine art,... https://botfrens.com/collections/111

i think i finally cracked why i didn’t like Spirited Away. i just don’t like Haku. in the other two Little Girl Movies by Ghibli, the young boy character (YBC) is a distant apparition or kind of a boneless nerd, but here the YBC is powerful and an item in the plot and i just don’t fuck with him.
and in the second half he’s less of an item and it allows Chihiro to Do Things and be an active item herself instead of Buffeted By The Winds Of The Plot.
i watched Spirited Away. it is a pretty good movie in the second half aaaand kinda ehhhh in the first half. probably my least favorite of the Little Girl Trilogy ive seen (Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away).
usually i don’t mind the “movie establishes status quo, which is then wrecked, child adapts to new normal” thing all these movies do, but here it felt like the status quo & new normal was so obviously paper-to-be-torn that i was unengaged for the front half. but once she gets her job, it gets good.
saw Resident Evil. i did not like how much i understood and identified with the mannerisms and reactions of the main character. he kinda also looks like how i looked when i went to the theater. much to consider.
oh and movie good. set design amazing. score quite good.
I was consistently snickering throughout, and oftentimes not even nervously. austin abrams is just that good at playing a comedic schlub.
also was scared n stressed n stuff, but laughing too. it’s like a comedy writer wrote it or somethin.
