Whole lotta people gonna wind up blind or dead

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court agrees to review Reconstruction-era ban on distilling spirits in private homes.

Like a million, I'm literally the worst person to watch a movie with, but my favorite of these is that Michael J. Fox was so tired after the Back to the Future shoots that they'd have crew drive him home, carry him into his house and put him in bed

Amy "Thunderjam" Chase@amythunderjam.bsky.social

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

This is superior to any AI generated menu. This place rules. You can only order via phone and the guy who answers when you call is not even slightly interested in making this experience anything more than exactly what it needs to be.

This cover is nuts. Are ripley and newt the aliens?

Can't remember the last time I saw something as feebleminded as the eminem verse. I've read more insightful and intellectually robust Youtube comments

The first time I saw this I was posting in the discord about my caves of qud character whose name was Chunklet

Another thing to remember on this bisexual day is that The Grungler is canonically bi. I do enjoy how it's become a term for "token cis guy who hangs out with a bunch of trans weirdos" but the original post was also about straight women being weird about bi men.

dolly was emblematic of everything good about america and her passing is hard to read as anything other than an ill portent

I was once at an interview with Tom Skeritt in which he said his most striking on-set memory was, iirc, seeing Ballejo in the costume without the head, holding an engineering textbook and talking about airplanes to someone on the crew

Steve Senski's Watching Night Gallery@stevensenski.bsky.social

Remembering Bolaji Badejo, the 7'2" Nigerian actor and artist who entered cinematic history by playing the Xenomorph in 1979's ALIEN. He was only 39 when sickle cell anemia claimed his life.

Must be nice

Watching Prime Minister Carney discussing the breakdown of the Canada-US trade deal at a press conference and just really appreciating living in a country where the leader can speak coherently and knowledgeably about what is actually happening.

A lot of people secretly think racism is bad because it's cruel, not because it's incorrect. It is in fact both.

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

Some of the richest people in the world want a racial caste system, and they want scholarly backing for that in the form of racist pseudoscience. And a lot of ostensibly non racist people quietly agree, and don’t like to see those who peddle that pseudoscience excluded from mainstream institutions.

Lol damn this sucks

Feeling like a genius for looking up Dungeon Crawler Carl images so I can learn I will hate hate hate every moment of this and not waste any money checking it out lol oh so it's just Ready Player One but if Ernest Cline listened to less dadrock and played Portal and Borderlands gotcha

Actually we'd have to regulate C3PO because he's very annoying

Coleman Ridge@colemanridge.bsky.social

If analogous to AI, C3PO would be a person who could look at and memorize all the art on the internet very quickly and then reproduce any of it entirely or in part. This would make him a special sort of person for whom looking was a form of mass copying. Such people would need different regulation.

The reason our internet service broadly sucks in the US is because everybody wants infrastructure and nobody wants to pay for it.

The US is full of suburbs, which are full of copper cable nobody wants, and nobody wants to pay to overlay it with fiber because developers and ISPs didn't put conduit in the ground (usually).

Last point: municipal governments are insane. A lot of complaints about permitting are overblown but some are real and many small-to-medium cities filibuster all utility expansion with permit requirements. I had one city engineer demand that I get civil drawings for a 2x2 hole in soft surface.

No upgrade path for existing infrastructure. Basically every residential development constructed over the last four decades was built as cheap as possible. All the copper cable was direct buried and is functionally dead when its service lifetime is over.

More on that: underground placement is ferociously expensive at scale if you have to drill and you're not in Florida, where the ground conditions make it easy. Nobody wants to pay to drill just to upgrade a suburb to fiber.

Why are things like this? Lots of reasons. But I started with Nobody Wants to Pay For It because everything comes down to the money. There are many contributing factors. Here are some.

Cost of living. Infrastructure is like anything else, you have to buy objects and pay people to go put them somewhere. Buying the object is generally the cheapest part of this process. Paying people to go place it is the most expensive, and labor cost is largely derived from cost of living.

If you're one of the lucky few to live in an area with fiber, real fiber all the way to your on-premise equipment and not the fake FTTN Google provides, congratulations. You probably have good internet access.

I'm still a This Meeting Could Have Been an Email person but after four years as an engineer for a major ISP I feel confident saying that the reason these meetings happen is because a lot of people are functionally illiterate

Honestly, I'm in shock. Hard to communicate how insane this is, to put it in non-software terms. Imagine a record label bought Chuck Berry and told him he could only play smooth jazz. It's every bit as insulting. Ludicrous.
