Sorry but we'll never shy away from an excuse to highlight one of the rarest items in our archive: Check out some clips of Nintendo veteran Steve Okimoto introducing the GBA to Nintendo of America employees for the first time! This tape is dated 9/22/00, nearly 8 months prior to the GBA's US launch!

Happy birthday to the Game Boy Advance, which released in the USA on this day in 2001! Can you believe Nintendo's potent little handheld is a quarter-century old this year? We feel old.

They mention in the video about the battery indicator going red for low battery, then mention "plugging it into the wall to charge it up." So they already had plans for a rechargable battery unit for it before it was even released?

Just wanted to point out that Nintendo engineered & sold their own GBA rechargeable battery pack (AGB-003). They could also be referring to this - but the way the device works (and rechargeable AA's) don't really fit into his description, so maybe it's just a suggestion of possibility? 😛

Here's the full clip about battery with a bit more context! Based on this, we're guessing Steve was referring to the idea of removing and charging a set of rechargeable AAs.

When I was a kid in the '80s we already had "rechargeable" batteries which were very primitive. They looked like regular AAs but they were put into a charging device & had a lifespan of roughly 50 charges before they died. They had problems w/leaking & swelling! I had them in my walkman as a kid.

Wikipedia also cites an interview with Satoru Okada about how he eventually won people over with a rechargeable GBA, though admittedly it doesn't mention when. One thing is clear though: they were definitely experimenting with rechargeable options, but wary of cost! shmuplations.com/okada2022/

i've never seen so much technical talk coming from the company since the Switch 2 presentation last year (granted, different audiences, times and allat) thanks for sharing! 🙇

Incredible level of communication. Great clarity in telling specs, good use of comparisons and great body language + delivery. Wish to be even half as good as Steve in public speaking.

#meirl when realizing the GBA is a “turn of the century” handheld that is officially a quarter century old

Check out our archive to learn more about this tape, and feel free to reach out if you'd like to schedule a screening of the full video! Ever wonder what it was like to be a fly on the wall at NoA when the GCN and GBA were being launched? Wonder no more! archive.hitsave.org/ark:/78322/5...

My very first day of work out of college happened to align with the Nintendo GBA developers' conference, which I got to attend down on the Seattle waterfront. It was an amazing event and I'm sure Steve gave at least one talk. Somewhere I have my notebook & pen from that event...

You were right, Shellie mentions Steve's work at the developer's conference when she introduces him for this presentation!

Possible, but more likely he was just talking about rechargeable AAs. Here’s some more context! bsky.app/profile/hits...
