It's not hard to understand why appeals to the "center" (which just means the right wing) come at the cost of votes on the left. This seems baffling to many of the "political strategy" minds on here whose apparent plan is to have their cake and eat it

One of the drivers I think is that there's a weird tendency to look at political issues as problems you solve by yelling at voters instead of addressing to the candidate or politician.

"If everyone had simply voted correctly, my plan would have worked flawlessly"

it's not all of them but I think some small fraction of them are REALLY committed to The System and how they imagine it's supposed to work. they view voters choosing wrong as "regrettable" But ultimately the correct result. only an electorate that is virtuous enough deserves good outcomes

It's frustrating to watch play out over and over - when someone (usually a trans person) objects to a decision or statement made by a *candidate or politician,* they get swarmed by Election Methodists freaking out about *voter* behavior

I say this so often. Yelling at individual voters because they're disillusioned by bad decisions the candidate made is not going to do any good! It simply can't, just do the damn math! It's the candidate's job to get voters excited to vote for them and alienating voters is a failure on their part!

"If left voters don't want to vote for a republican, I will be forced to become even more republican 😤😤😤" Votes DSA "This is terrorism against me personally"

The desire to twist the words of Talarico into "sacrificing" or "abandoning trans people" or "throwing them under the bus" when it's really just a minor qualification of his position made to the Fox News crowd is unsettling in its maximalism, especially given his incredible pro-trans track record.

You're the one who mentioned Talarico first here, but it also applies to Palestinians and just the left in general, going back years. That said, his rhetorical weasel words designed to trick bigots that he agrees with them are 1) harmful in themselves, 2) bad politics. bsky.app/profile/hugb...

I have little doubt that was his intent with the phrasing, but I still think it was a bad move emblematic of wider Dem problems. You can never cede the framing! Cute word games to thread a needle don't help when people hear you say, quote, "I oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports."

I said to someone last night, it's like watching a dog with a ball in its mouth that cannot understand that it has to put that ball down to pick up another ball

If they really thought their realpolitik said trans women and online leftists don't matter, wouldn't they just block and move on and focus on canvasing gettable votes? Their own logic says they're acting stupidly. They just want us to tell them they're doing a great job stopping the Worse Guys.

The things that are good for making a post go viral and feel righteous on social media are not necessarily conducive to coalition building and winning elections, let alone changing people’s minds . No one’s going to change their behavior either way. Just another fun conundrum of the modern age.
