“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.
not sure what happens when hyperscalers saturate the global bond markets on a bet & lose; "too big to fail" in 2008 wasn't literal, but what if it is here?
can Google crowd out global investment on bad bet, yet still be able to pay it off even if AI investments flop?
horrifying implications if so!
they're impacting *global* investment by sucking up all the air in bond markets when they make an issuance.
if it turns out that investment didn't make nearly the expected ROI, but they can STILL pay off the debt, what does that mean for how much global value generation they're ALREADY extracting?
"rich people can force an economy to do irrational things by throwing their wealth around" is hardly a new problem, but the scale we're talking about this time is pretty terrifying!
not just if there's a crash, but if there's *not*--what happens if these companies are *literally* "too big to fail"?
I went to go see if the new Musk documentary would be playing in theaters in Japan anywhere, and as a result found this NHK documentary on Musk (and DOGE and Yarvin etc) from 2025 that someone subtitled in English and only has 50 views.

This is another great, approachable explainer on “the rationalist wackos who have managed to take over much of the AI industry, and who now have tons of money and political power.”
www.iankduncan.com/personal/202...
Over and over again these AI guys have proven themselves to have utterly childish worldviews, brains stunted by mindbending amounts of privilege. You'd almost feel sorry for them if they weren't actively destroying the lives of, in a literal sense, everyone.

The sunny side of this delusion is the computer gives you a flying car and makes it so you don't have to work. The blackpill one is that it wipes us out via some cinematic method TBD. Two futures you don't actually have to live in. Both are abdications, and embarrassingly childish on their face.

Very grateful to this Ivy Astrix for writing this up, & hope to see justice eventually.
Starting* to think Epstein shit is the natural outcome of allowing intense wealth and power disparities to form, i.e. the purpose & function of capitalism. The modern world is built on & ruled by rape ideology.
Exploiting natural resources for private gain. Exploiting others' labor for private gain. Exploiting others' bodies for private gain.
Invading nations to rule without consent. Invading economies to extract without consent. Invading bodies for sex without consent.
Ignoring consent to colonize a people. Ignoring consent to close a store trying to unionize. Ignoring consent to enforce a pregnancy. Ignoring consent to make a CSAM generator and force people to use it. Ignoring consent to build a datacenter. Ignoring consent to kidnap people from their community.
A lot of people said a lot of things about the ineffectiveness of production limitations for generating greenhouse gas reductions and speeding up renewable adoption for the past decade which were clearly false. May "keynesianism means we have to keep building oil and gas infrastructure" finally die
President Trump’s war on Iran, now in its seventh month, has led to a plunge in the consumption of oil and gas around the world as fighting disrupts production and transportation. https://wapo.st/4ycPvNA
❶ It's encouraging that a movement whose representative says this stuff has gotten into the halls of power.
❷ Obsessions with "whataboutism" I think fall under this same issue; when your opponent points out a real problem*, you can't just wave it away simply because solving it would be too hard.
“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”
crazy how much Mamdani speaks my language
Asterisk because when your opponent points out a FAKE problem, you shouldn't lend it credence.
If people tell you things are too expensive, don't just say "no they aren't."
If people tell you trans kids in sports are a safety concern, don't say "we'll ban them if it's a problem."
which do you think is more true: that the median voter mostly agrees with dems but hates trans people, or that the median voter thinks dems are spineless and stand for nothing
I hate doing the "a rollback of trans rights is the gateway for a rollback of women's rights" thing because trans rights are human rights in and of themselves, whatever the impact on cis women.
But goddamn I wish more cis women had a sense of history and self preservation.
The French translation besides being sexist also completely altered her character and made all the semiotics associated with her inherently malign, especially her tattoos.
It seems a minor point, but it shows the power of translation and introducing terms that are supposedly equivalent.
The Kahina myth, a story of a North African Jewish Amazigh warrior queen who repelled the Umayyad because her prophetic visions gave her advantage in battle. According to Iben Khaldun, in the myth she lived to be 129. Besides, the French in their translation introduced her as a Witch.
The notion of witchcraft is a colonial invention. In Arabic, especially in North Africa, the notion of magic as done by a woman would be called a seer or sorceress. These terms do have a lot more neutral connotations and don't imply the same negative view as Witch does.
so you want to be a center-right social media site at the cost of your marginalised audiences, do a little dogwhistling and reap all those monetary benefits? okay. okay. well then you cant be weepy about it on the forum. rule number one write that down
The consistent insistence by the Saudis and Americans that the "Houthis" are "just rebels" is really misleading. If you want to oppose them more effectively, at least start by acknowledging this is a highly effective movement in charge of a state.
One of the ultimate Liberal American exceptionalist moments I've witnessed was when someone complained about how because of this war Trump has started with Iran, Saudi Arabia has withdrawn 200 million dollars it would invest in the New York theatre. Calling it a tragedy.
Just in time for the latest oil price spike, we published our article urging the ECB not to hike rates to fight a supply shock. Europe needs a new inflation governance for shockflation. We need disaster preparedness for essentials instead of increasing investment costs.
btw this is why I love working with @krisknigge.bsky.social because he knows all that shit and so he matches me BEAUTIFULLY; like, in Adios, nobody can really tell where I stop writing the Edie line and Kris starts it. Any time I talk to him about story, he immediately GETS what I'm doing.
I'm also designing a lot of scenes to play out in specific ways. Like, even with Adios, the writing isn't just "the dialogue," it's the way the farm is designed to be a spiral outwards, or how I sequence events, or how I cut between gameplay moments
The better your ear is, the more you understand psychology and character drama, the better for me. I've known people who can write 'good lines' that are just good prose and not really, like, meant to be spoken aloud. To me, like, working with actors, getting great performance, that's what we need.
when Republicans are on the wrong side of a 60-40 issue they double down over and over and over, it becomes the center of political debate, and more often than not the numbers move. when Democrats are in that position they immediately give up
I like this post as an example of how Everything Is A Choice in art. If you're just quickly looking btwn the original & knockoff, you may not really notice/care about the differences between squiggliness of particular lines, but in fact that is an important aspect from the creator's perspective.
Hey guys, if you're gonna share that one meme I made like a million years ago on Tumblr, share the original, not the horrible auto-smoothed traced version. Don't smooth out my angry, "it's 11 at night and I have FEELINGS ABOUT ART" hand wobbles, they're part of the piece!
As audience, you can't know what went into all those decisions; which ones were obsessed over, which ones were compromises with the medium, which ones were easter eggs only a dear friend would catch.
But, and this is crucial, you know they were made. You get to know, "all of this is important."

When you see someone's art, every single aspect of it is something that had to be decided on. Every brushstroke, every comma, every pause for breath, every leaf on a tree, is there because the artist decided it would be there, in that specific way, not any other way.
what I wouldn't give
It's neat how people have been wanting this for probably 2+ decades now and no high-profile dem has really done it. I guess you could say Walz started making an attempt with the "weird" stuff, but that got shut down quick.
"I am for the dignity and safety and equal rights of trans people everywhere. Fuck you. The end."
"I do not believe you care about this issue. You are lying. In fact you're a straight up weirdo for fixating on kids' genitals so much. That is odd behavior. Let kids run around with their friends."
I just wrote a paranormal story in the form of a fictional forum thread!
A young woman discovers a video captured from inside a recurring dream.

Fun little read, but yes the argument itself is a strongly held belief of mine. Particularly when it comes to the risks of yelling at people for being too extreme, as that behavior is more frequently seen from "big" speakers, e.g. "we have to stop talking about defunding the police" from major Dems.
This is a sort of dorky joke post I wrote out but which I do also actually believe. We here on BlueSky get mad at each other for not Posting Correctly in defence of the cause and I just think the overall incentive structure cannae support discipline.

I have little doubt that was his intent with the phrasing, but I still think it was a bad move emblematic of wider Dem problems. You can never cede the framing!
Cute word games to thread a needle don't help when people hear you say, quote, "I oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports."
People love to complain about voters being dumb and lament politics being all just optics, but then refuse to actually play the optics game and wrestle for framing. Who're really the dumb ones here?
