My armchair analysis of Supreme Court Retirement Watch is that I genuinely don't think Trump wanted or wants Alito or Thomas to retire, because Alito and Thomas are already the Trump administration's de facto representatives on the Court, and I'm not sure he could find anyone better

That’s not really the point though, is it? It’s about what another 30-40 years of new installed justices with similar views would do, right?

FWIW, mine is that they’re playing chicken with the other judges. “Go along with rigging the Senate elections or risk the Dems filling our seats”. Or they are just getting so old that they’re not thinking things through and don’t want to change their daily lives like RBG at the end.

I can never consider the SC changeout from Thurgood Marshall to Clarence Thomas without shaking my head. Among all the terrible things the Republican Party has done to America, that swap has to be one of the worst.

Could Trump find *a* more MAGA-brain-poisoned lawyer to put on the Supreme Court? Sure, James Ho and Josh Blackman exist. But those chuckleheads don't have the institutional power that Alito and Thomas have built within the conservative legal movement.

Last chance to get Judge Aileen Cannon? Pathetically, they all would get confirmed by this senate. Even cornyn/tillis/murkowski/collins would in the end find a way to get to 50+1.

I cry to think of all of the sunk costs just going up in flames. How many more homes, RVs, and private jet flights would you have to shell out for just to own a new justice? And think of the confirmation! Sexual assault victims don't pay to silence themselves. A lot of real work goes into that.
