This is eminently reasonable, extremely well-argued, and essential reading. Erin is correct about all of this, and it is doubly urgent given what we've seen in the UK. 2026 is the time to correct the Dems about this. 2028 may be too late.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

Not shocking. These bans are as much about keeping men and women in their "proper" places as anything else. After all, what does it say about the naturalness of male hegemony if men can just be women (and vice versa). Or worse yet, lose physical competitions to them.

theconversation.comAre transgender sports bans really about protecting women? Survey data tells a different storyIn a recent national survey, Americans with the most negative views of women were the biggest proponents of transgender sports bans.

This would be a great answer if what he said immediately after wasn't cut out. Next he's asked about sports and says he doesn't want "biological males" competing against his 12 year old granddaughter and hurting her. Literally using his next sentence to bully 12 year old trans girls.

BeshearStan@beshearstan.bsky.social

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

Lord, I see that you gave El-Sayed the balls to reject the premise of a bad-faith GOP argument and I want that for other Democrats.

ABDUL EL-SAYED PUSHES BACK ON QUESTIONING OVER MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD

I was going to say cameras because a digital SLR in the 90s took pictures as well as a potato and cost the same as compact car. But now we've come full circle with Flock and pervert glasses and I sort of wish we had to go back to film.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

The way the rich can just buy a politician nowadays is disgusting. The amount of money Musk spent on this race is unfathomable to most people. If Paxton wins, Musk will own him. Bought and paid for, pure and simple. I am glad somebody is pointing this shit out.

Team Talarico@teamtalaricohq.bsky.social

NEW AD: Have you seen these anti-Talarico attack ads? Elon Musk paid for nearly all of them. The world's first trillionaire knows if he drags the most corrupt politician in Texas across the finish line, Ken Paxton will owe him everything. Elon Musk: Texas is not for sale.

You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

Why do so many democratic candidates find this so hard? Forstag sounds reasonable here: everybody deserves freedom and dignity, let parents and doctors make care decisions, let leagues make their own rules, and keep government out of it. His opponent sounds like the raving weirdo.

Rep. Zooey Zephyr@zoandbehold.bsky.social

Let's go, Sam Forstag! That's how you stand up for trans people on the national stage. If congressional candidates in western Montana—one of the most competitive House races in the entire country—can stand up for trans folks in every aspect of our lives, democrats everywhere should take note.

I've spent a lot of time debunking claims that way overstate the migration impacts of wealth taxes. But fear not - if we put our minds to it, I do believe we can design a wealth tax high enough to get Elon to flee the country

Great article. Pay "can remain low as long as a white person is proud to be white, as long as they see themselves represented in houses of power, on corporate boards, in the top ranks of the army, in statues on statehouse lawns ... [and others] are seen to suffer in some way because of their color."

Don't know why the discover tab thinks I am into bears. Like burly hairy gay man bears. It used push random muscle bear thirst traps. Now it's just random selfies of gray-bearded older gentleman bears. I have never sought out either of these things, but if I had to choose I think I'd go back to smut

Now do Amy Acton. I want to also say, Equality Ohio and other progressive dem orgs weakness on holding Amy Acton’s feet to the fire is what lead to Marcy Kaptur feeling emboldened to proceed with her own anti-trans ad.

Political winds do not only flow from voters to politicians, they go in reverse as well. Democrats running ads like these signal to the general public and their voter base that this issue now has support by both parties, and that hating trans people is publicly acceptable. They do harm to us.

New Mary Peltola ad. “No, I don’t want kids getting surgeries to change genders, or men in girls bathrooms.” Dem, (AK-AL)

Underrated point here: when you alienate your base, you're not just losing votes. You're losing people who would campaign for you. Who would phone bank for you, knock on doors for you, tell their friends and family to vote for you. Is the hypothetical genital-obsessed centrist gonna do all that?

Blue Heron Farm@blueheronfarm.bsky.social

I finally sat down and wrote an email to the Talarico campaign. Doing nothing felt untenable. I encourage other decent Texans to communicate their disappointment. If this can help you get started, feel free to use anything that works for you

i don't care what the issue is, if your election opponent is running millions of dollars in ads about one single issue, you cannot, under any circumstances, say that your opponent is right about the issue.

The point is that it's not going to stop with sports. They are using this seemingly ✌🏾reasonable✌🏾 argument about sports to scaffold other forms of discrimination against trans people writ large and cis women too! Conservatives want to push all women out of sports ultimately. What's more:

canadianbrock.bsky.social@canadianbrock.bsky.social

Okay, but it's the difference between going to internment camps and not being able to play certain contact sports. If I was forced to choose, as the two sorry system makes Americans, I know what my choice would be. I'd vote against the person advocating for internment camps.

This is a story about men harassing women. It's being sold to the public as a story about conservatives protecting women, but it's the opposite of that.

Whats worse... A single Democratic loss in a statewide race to a right-wing governor? Or a Democratic Party win in Ohio that uses transphobia to get there, teaching dems across the country that this is a new acceptable tactic? The latter results in no party left to fight for us.

RoxyDog@roxydog.bsky.social

I understand your disappointment but why do you want to undermine the Democrat in this race? You think Ramaswamy will have your back? These purity tests are what gave us trump and his Supreme Court.

Good thread about why Democrats' silence on trans issues in the face of Republican attacks did not help them. Dems would have been viewed more favorably if they had actually pushed back. And in their silence, they allowed Rs to sway opinions and push anti-trans lies deeper into the public psyche.

Jay Marcellus@jmappel.bsky.social

In the fall of 2024, as Trump and Republicans spread lies about transgender people and Democratic policies supporting them, Democrats largely remained silent. While they did not move to the right as Edsall proposes now, they did cede the issue entirely. The results were predictable.

Already seeing advice from punditocracy that Dems ought to tack to the right to (ironically) raise the saliency and affirm the positions of Republicans on so-called "cultural issues." Let's ask Keir Starmer how well this worked - I hear he has loads of free time.

"We need not sit idly. Now that we recognize the danger of AI-enhanced mass #surveillance, we can make the policy choices not to implement it ... The chill of AI-powered mass surveillance will suffocate the very foundations of healthy democratic societies. But we can still choose a different path."
