I've chatted with a few NDP MLAs and staffers on this, and they were truly and honestly stressed about how often they had late night procedural wrangling and votes where the government could have been defeated The problem is, I'm not sure anyone outside of NDP family members cares in the slightest

NDP Leader David Eby says the number one question he’s getting on the campaign trail is, “Why are we having an election?” His response:

We all know why! Arrogance, buffoonery, entitlement, fear....looking at the reality of your failure as govt. Which has been whittled down for 3 decades. As a 50 year supporter of the NDP with a family of 5 we have been betrayed for at least 3 decades by NDP. No more!! VOTE GREEN!! This family is!!

Hard thing to argue that the reason everyone has to go to the polls is because the opposition holding you to account makes you have to actually work. I'm no pundit, but I don't think this will resonate.

Saying "it was really hard to govern so we had to call an election" only goes so far with the public if it seems like you were able to pass all the big things you wanted to pass while you were in government.

Also seems like an excellent reason to try to win the upcoming by-elections! As a long-time NDP supporter, many of the times this seemed to happen were when Eby was proposing something unpopular and the dissent was a positive. We don't need a leader that can't be challenged.

Can Eby say "the Conservatives were in disarray, we were annoyed at how difficult it was to govern, and if I stuck around there was the serious risk that caucus would remove me as leader, so I rolled the dice?" no But it would have the virtue of painting a much more accurate picture.

Eby really wants us to know this was his only choice but the truth is it’s not. He could have conceded more to the Greens to get their support on confidence votes. He could have let his govt fall in a way that his opponents would wear. He could have kept on trucking for 2 more years.

Might explain why people like Ravi Kahlon didnt run again. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in the spotlight after Eby's inevitable ousting (inevitable as in even if he pulls a victory the same people who wanted him gone as leader would be right back in their caucus seats)

But it's also clear that they weren't, and if he had just kept governing, passing his policies would have been easier this fall session.

Sometimes, Eby had a lot of trouble doing things that were ill-advised to begin with, such as when he decided to suspend DRIPA, saying it was non-negotiable.

If this is accurate (and it probably is), why not simply let the Conservatives be the one to take down the government? You still get the snap election, but now the ire of the public is on the Conservatives who took advantage of NDP MLAs getting cancer treatments to bring the govt down

There were also internal tensions - Eby initially stated he would make the DRIPA suspension bill a confidence vote but backed down after MLA Joan Phillip and others in caucus made clear they were not having it. Greene from cabinet didn't run again and flat out blamed the NDP's Tilbury LNG project

Yeah, sorry, for the what they're paid, and the 67 days or three and half months they were in session in 2025- this excuse falls flat. Yes, I know there's more to the job than that, but if the argument is "it's hard to be at work for three months in a year?" They deserve to lose.
