In honour of everyone thinking Half-Life 3 might be about to be announced (lmao), and me being the biggest worst/best Half-Life sicko, here I exclusively reveal to you the identity of the Gman

I've always felt the Gman was just Valve. He comes in at the end and apologises for it being over. Then in Alyx he appears and says "Gordon's boring, Alyx is the protagonist now." It's like Tom Bombadil being a Tolkien self-insert who tells the audience not to worry about anything it's just a story

unfortunately for anyone who enjoys having respect for me i'm only sort of joking, i think if newell wasn't the name on the sign the sign is a straightforwardly good connection to make! related fun fan theories: gman was a black mesa dude who schism'd with breen

I always thought he was a type of interdimensional broker, taking clients that want to alter the state of things or course of events and employing a gaggle of wildcard motherfuckers like Gordon to inject strategically into time+space

when making HLA they forgot about this, but!!! in hl1 the gman talks about his employers, and 20 years later in hl2 era he never mentions them, he talks about making all gordon-related decisions himself, he used to have to bother with dissenters but doesn't anymore, and his briefcase logo is gone

another idea that always floated around in my head was that the gman orchestrated the rezzo casc specifically in order to get out from under his employers as some element of a sort of coup

the g-man, Gabe Newell, offers gordon as a service (GAAS) to the highest bidder regardless of consequence. unfettered capitalism is the omnipresent villain of half-life as in our own lives; it feels impossible to imagine a world without it, but half-life dares you to dream
