Web friends: in 2026, what’s the best semi-friendly way to make a hand rolled website? My kid wants to get into web making, but stuff like Eleventy or Hugo feels a little advanced. Is there a beginner-level option that’s more approachable?

Yeah, thought of that too! Definitely a good place to start, but something with a little more bootstrapping upfront would be helpful I think

Just do it by hand. You don't need frameworks or anything. A heading here, some id there and some css. python -m http(.)server for localhosting. And for sharing any of the git-pages providers. they are free.

They have a web-based HTML editor that lets you jump right in without a local IDE or git or anything like that. Just hack away at some markup 😅

What your kid go with? I’d had said glitch if it was still around or second what most said: Start simple with the fundamentals, just plain static HTML and CSS, put it on GH Pages, no Jekyll unless they are more into writing and publishing.

We started with Neocities and she had a good time with it. The editor is essentially just HTML/CSS by hand, but it has a cool community vibe that’s inspiring. (There are a lot of example personal sites)
