It is shocking that cultivating an attitude of being an asshole to random strangers online would lead to fascism.
(The internet, and perhaps the world, would be a different place if more people's pasttime was "be excellent to each other.")
No. I very much remember it being a diving force of fascism. It was just another right wing pipeline for kids to follow. Trolling videos was how myself and a lot of my friends discovered people like "leafyishere" and that is a nasty pit i wouldn't wish on anyone.
I remember quote cascading on Usenet. I remember going to troll in alt.cheese and discovering a community so earnestly excited and mutually supportive about cheese that I briefly made myself its defender instead.
People constantly accuse me of trolling when I'm not, how do I get people to start accusing me of rage baiting when I'm not so I can get money from it?
Different things.
Trolling is about the love of the game, purely for amusing yourself or others, or to fill some hole in your dying soul. A ragebaiter is just a type of engagement whore, all about the metrics.
