this doesn't get talked about enough consolidated corporate media owners fired all the beat reporters with informed subject matter expertise because they didn't want to pay them health insurance, which degraded informed consensus and created a media environment easily exploitable by bad actors

We are losing something by having newsrooms where everyone who has more than a few years’ experience has gotten fired. I don’t fault a young writer for not knowing about things that happened before she was born. But now there are no editors to help give context to these stories, either.

The Wire season 5 portrayed this exact problem decades ago, as Twigg, the veteran police reporter, got shoved out and Templeton, the rookie who was making up stories and quotes out of whole cloth as news, got elevated.

certainly also suits corporate power to replace grizzled experience-based truth-to-power journalism with an ad-based infotainment apparatus helmed by a bunch of 12 year olds with minimal understanding of contextual beat history

from there it's a hop, skip, and a jump to create a "news" industry that's basically just a badly-automated ouroboros of infotainment engagement and enragement slop peppered with propaganda and corporatist cack
