the "left" broadly advocated for open access community owned gigabit fiber networks while the right coddled monopoly access to the detriment of progress and affordability for four decades

Also the very first thing that source article does is credibly quote an employee of a website run by an overt white supremacist whose "mission alignment" has been to encourage CSAM and authoritarian propaganda, so maybe we calm down a little

I think a lot of this "the left doesn't get AI" or "you can't talk with the left about AI" originates with annoyance by libertarians and the right at people reminding them ethics and empathy should still matter in technology development and adoption, and it isn't just about "work flow efficiencies"

they're having fun with their toys and they don't want to be reminded that Elon musk's data centers are funneling deadly pollution right into predominately black neighborhoods, man or that the entire underlying financing of this movement is shaky AF or that many of these CEOs are technofascist

You're so lame for thinking technology shouldn't leave millions or billions of people out of work while simultaneously destroying the environment, using most drinkable water, and creating the greatest level of inequality in the history of humanity

While I agree somewhat, there is also imo a very real problem on the left to not see the potential in AI/automation to actually drive for positive system change, and only see the threats and limitations.

I'm old & retired, but all I see is the same non-IT managers who loved to make big pronouncements about technology, but who couldn't do a ham sandwich in a paper bag with "IT" scrawled on it in crayon. Sure, they don't understand technology, but I guess you can't make an omelette without a few lies.

Kind of wild how he just totally dismissed all of the environment work done by the left, as if not living in a world made literal hell by runaway climate change is not a long term benefit for humanity.

The entirety of the history of renewable energy, etc. This is mostly the right being mad that somebody is reminding them ethics still matters

Once again the right cares about hypothetical future people more than actual human beings. And just like with abortion, once those future people actually exist they'll tell them to pick themselves up by the bootstraps and stop asking for handouts

How about climate science? Mass transit (like bullet trains)? Medical research? All of this incorporates embracing new technology, doesn't it? All of it also focuses on the good for entire communities, just like your excellent example.

A conservative I know was SO excited to hear his hometown was selected by Google for free fiber optic Internet, and has spent the intervening 10+ years intermittently bitching in frustration that Google somehow never delivered on it.

Missing out on.... What? Slop? Mistakes? 80% accurate median bullshit? Tech: hey do you want my error prone intern to make your job more difficult for you by confidently making mistakes or bullshitting? Us: no thanks Tech: tHe LeFt Is MiSsInG oUt On Ai

Also, I and others are pro AI use in science where it really works. It's being used successfully in protein folding and where there are huge amounts of data like sky surveys or from the LHC. But the web crawling copyright stealing general purpose AI is another animal.

I think they're genuinely mad that SOME people on the left remind them there are some very problematic ethical choices being made in terms of this tech's application. They're having fun with their toys and think that's a bummer, dude.

Guess they don't see Language or Emotional Intelligence as Technology. If the tech is Open, makes lives better: doesn't kill the planet, harm kids, and enrich Billionaires... Then show us and The Left is in. Mushroom Leather is kinda cool.

I've commented directly on the article that 'technology' is used to mean 'new technology' and the rhetoric of 'innovation'. The important thing is less the technology itself and more the justification to change things in ways that - who'da thunk it? - make it easier to control and exploit workers.

they don't care about the labor part because they all fancy themselves temporarily inconvenienced billionaires just a few hustles away from being the next zuckerberg-esque tech plantation overlord

"Somehow all of the interesting energy for discussions about the long-range future of humanity is concentrated on the right.” They’re saying the billionaires pushing for a new technology to pervade all aspects of our lives with absolutely zero regulation or criticism are *right wing*? Shocker.

The AI-boosting left seem to mostly emanate from the intellectual sphere around Adam Tooze, who has done and continues to do good work, but his fascination with China and ‘world-historical change’ really blinds him here.
