the "left" broadly advocated for open access community owned gigabit fiber networks while the right coddled monopoly access to the detriment of progress and affordability for four decades

Also the very first thing that source article does is credibly quote an employee of a website run by an overt white supremacist whose "mission alignment" has been to encourage CSAM and authoritarian propaganda, so maybe we calm down a little

I think a lot of this "the left doesn't get AI" or "you can't talk with the left about AI" originates with annoyance by libertarians and the right at people reminding them ethics and empathy should still matter in technology development and adoption, and it isn't just about "work flow efficiencies"

they're having fun with their toys and they don't want to be reminded that Elon musk's data centers are funneling deadly pollution right into predominately black neighborhoods, man or that the entire underlying financing of this movement is shaky AF or that many of these CEOs are technofascist

The whole edifice is based on unsupported, fantasy valuations. From their 'phone number bank balances, to the overinflated opinions of themselves and their outsized political clout. Its unsustainable and will crash soon enough, which is why they're in such a rush to impose their tecno-dystopia on us

You're so lame for thinking technology shouldn't leave millions or billions of people out of work while simultaneously destroying the environment, using most drinkable water, and creating the greatest level of inequality in the history of humanity

While I agree somewhat, there is also imo a very real problem on the left to not see the potential in AI/automation to actually drive for positive system change, and only see the threats and limitations.

yep! though I think some myopia is understandable given (looks around at literally everything) what's been going on. We're asking them to trust the same tech companies that just installed a murderous autocracy and have exhibited 10 straight years of abysmal judgement?

All while they lay off their workers en masse, in horribly cruel ways like leaving that WaPo reporter stranded in Ukraine, or any number of people laid off while driving a moving van to the office they had to RTO to. Some of us were those internal safety experts. We have good reasons for concern!

I consider myself more progressive/left-leaning and I'm not against the CONCEPT of AI, but everything regarding how it's currently being handled is wrong and it's being pushed long before it's ready.

Strict environmental & ethical regulations and copyright protections should have been put in place before AI went mainstream, plus it simply needs more time in the oven to achieve an acceptable level of accuracy.

I'm old & retired, but all I see is the same non-IT managers who loved to make big pronouncements about technology, but who couldn't do a ham sandwich in a paper bag with "IT" scrawled on it in crayon. Sure, they don't understand technology, but I guess you can't make an omelette without a few lies.
