attendance of this in-group circle jerk would likely be less of an issue if the corporate press hadn't been such an abject failure during America's descent into authoritarianism but such as it is it's just a gargantuan sundae of embarrassment, defended and attended by feckless clods

The media response to fascism shouldn't be giggles, cocktails, and hors d'oeuvres. If you care about functional journalism and the truth, the response should be active, outward revulsion and hostility. You don't share a cocktail with fascism, you destroy it. Else there is no journalism.

The US arming Israel when they are exterminating journalists should have been enough to turn the press away from the enemies of both news and free speech. Fascist takeover of networks and papers should have been enough. Lawsuits against news orgs should have been enough, etc. Name and shame.
