I continue to believe the white hot rage at AI deserves a wide berth and is a useful tool that can be leveraged to dislodge fascism because if we don't do that, absolutely nothing else is going to matter

If one side is gonna grasp for power by scapegoating trans kids and immigrants while the other side grasps for power by scapegoating AI, there’s no question in my mind which side I wanna be on.

Beautifully written. Can we please make “shitweasel” happen?! Just finished Laura Bates’ book, The New Age of Sexism” about these very shitweasels pushing their AI without a thought of the harms to women, girls, and minoritized groups. Fascinating/horrifying stuff.

Just yesterday, Windows changed their stock widget. I used to be able to click on the left end of the taskbar and it would pop up news and stock market info. If you clicked on the box with a ticker symbol, it would take you to a line chart and stats about the stock. Now it gives you an AI summary.

Put the blame on the technology creators, but mostly the consultants that are hyping the shit out of AI. They have been systematically scaring the crap out of clients and themselves to be ahead of the curve against their competition. This is driving IT departments nuts and…

Why do I have this sneaking suspicion the entire market will collapse once the insiders and the banksters have finished unloading the Space X, OpenAI, and Anthropic IPOs to the suckers . . . I mean, to retail investors?

by the time the public wakes up all of those guys will be off hyping quantum computing or something else it's basically what this country is, quite foundationally, from the era of the huckster with his cocaine-cough syrup cart to now

And this doesn't even get into the real harms of AI use such as reduced critical thinking skills (and possibly never developing various cognitive skills for children using them). In programming, for instance, there's a study showing coders using AI don't have a good mental map of the code...

As usual, nail right on the head. The largest problems with AI are absolutely NOT what AI is capable of, or what it would take to get it work, but the approach towards it by the people who'll nominally control it's destiny and just what a horrible way they've sold the whole endeavor.

100% The approach to making these tools usable, safe and valuable is critical to make this work. Selling this to bosses as wholesale labor replacement, not giving a shit about how models are trained, and being completely unethical about training data procurement undermines many of the upsides.

the technofascists also lobotomized all our regulators who'd enforce any sort of ethical and labor guardrails (if we had any), which I didn't really get into that is...bad
