I loved it because it removed the cognitive load of a buying decision: “how much is this worth to me?” Instead: “do I want to support this creator?” If payment rails are in place, why not offer that monetization mode to creators who don’t like paywalls? For podcasters it worked wonders back then!

Any case studies you can point to about this working out well for creators? It's interesting but I think in most cases not as good for creators. Would love to read about folks who found real success with this model.

I love this concept - especially the mix of monetization options. I have so many blogs on Leaflet that it would allow me to mix and match what that particular blog needed. Excited to see what ya'll come up with.

1/2 Super cool! Really interesting problem i see: how would standard.site play into this? I would imagine being able to to see that a publication has posted a new blog would still be desirable but the content being on the network poses problems with gating behind pay.

standard.siteStandard.site - One schema. Every platform.Standard.site provides shared lexicons for long-form publishing on AT Protocol. Making content easier to discover, index, and move across the ATmosphere.

2/2 One-off payments don’t seem to have this problem(like a tip as opposed to a subscription)

Yes, for now member-gated content will live off-protocol, but more to explore soon with permissioned data on atproto & may need some lexicon additions here :)

Not the whole publication, just the private content of member's only posts, but yes. We'll move this over to permissioned spaces when that's stable though!

I don’t have plans to monetize my (somewhat dormant) newsletter for now, but based on my previous experience, one-off payments alongside (and optionally, bundled with) recurring payments would be very useful. This is an area where Ghost (and maybe Substack?) has been completely lacking for years.

Another important feature is to not just offer monthly and yearly plans, but also quarterly, six months, and so on. Memberful has (had?) a nice blog post explaining that switching the default tier from monthly to quarterly significantly increases revenue. Ghost nor Substack support this.

Haha perils of testing on an open network, all the more reason to get the announcement out 🤠 thank you!

CC @joanwestenberg.com See if this makes sense for you alongside your existing Substack publication. As a regular reader, I find Leaflet much friendlier and more interoperable compared to Substack's walled garden approach. As a writer, you might find the lower platform fee more attractive. Win-win.

Thanks for sharing Darshak! Yes very interested in how we can support not only writers starting new publications, but experiments alongside existing ones (and things like other payment models & social mechanisms). Please reach out any time if you have any questions.

Of course, thanks for all the great work. That said, I just found out Joan is no longer doing paid articles, so my suggestion is moot. 😅 Anyway, I've started writing a bit on Leaflet and it's been a great experience, so thank you!

If you're investing in Bluesky & the Atmosphere as your social home, we're here to help you take advantage & make it more sustainable together. We've got powerful integrations with Bluesky — *and* — with @standard.site you get even more ways to reach people in a growing ecosystem.

You have until tomorrow to answer Nlnet's Taler fund. Taler will let you implement micro-payements per article read. The open Web dramatically needs micro-payments.

I think it's probably pretty hard to do on atproto, as it means individual authors selling individual subscriptions, *and* pooling content with others and selling bundled subscriptions, sharing revenue. All the rage 10y ago when micropayments were the future of media.

I think you need a United Artists kind of mutual agency to be able to make something like this work. A group of authors who agree to take an equal share of the pooled revenues with other authors in the same general area. Might be worth creating such an agency.
