Finally got around to writing about my experience at #IndiaFOSS2026. Many thanks to @tangled.org for the tickets! It was delightful to see the sheer energy and curiosity among the crowd. And at the risk of sounding way older than I am, my hopes for Gen Z have skyrocketed after this event.

Someone put up this tier list which anyone could come and change. Just standing there and watching people argue was a fun activity in itself.

My favourite talk was the one by Professor Mohit Tahiliani of NIT Karnataka, who shared his journey of creating a place where his students could learn, have fun and contribute meaningfully to the FOSS ecosystem.

And the booths! Oh, the energy was insane, and there were so many cool projects that I can't justly list them all down. The most crowded booths were those of @tangled.org, Frappe (frappe.io) and Ente (ente.com), but everyone else was building equally cool stuff.

There were so many cool talks about how FOSS is at the centre of crucial initiatives like healthcare digitization, language preservation and consumer privacy. Additionally, there was some super useful advice by student community leaders about how to build a community of excellent FOSS citizens.

Keyboard focus UX is **so** under-studied in recent decades. We've got places where interaction speed+accuracy actually matters -- store checkouts! -- using ancient UIs everywhere because *the keyboard actually works* and has affordances in pre-2000's software. Modern tech needs to re-learn this.

why does every little atproto app being cooked up rn have to have a frontend Designed By Claude ™️ why are we so hyped about social data and an open internet and then turning to ai when its time to create and play

My #atproto intro from @cascadiajs.com is posted!! Check it out for an entry-level overview to atproto, why it exists, and how to develop on it! And then share it with your friends! Who wants to see if we can get more views on it than @t3.gg 's talk? 😉

Love this thread. Resharing it mostly as a reminder to myself to try out all the other awesome applications on the Atmosphere.

the general bsky userbase being a lil dismissive of the standard.site integration is a reminder that this whole atproto atmosphere ecosystem is a long game. not everyone will be on board, and that's ok! we'll be ready to welcome people into a decentralized social future as big social fades away :)

Been seeing Venus and Jupiter in the sky for the last several days. Such a delight to see a professional photo. #astrophotography The best my phone could manage was this:

Nub seems like such a cool project! 🎯 Bullseye design choices, excellent performance and an interface you already know. Excited to try it out! #webdev #js

I hate hearing the word ‘framework’ from any engineer. You can replace that word with ‘overengineer’ and you'll be right about 90% of the time. You don't have to make frameworks for everything! Stop making everything 'robust' and 'future proof' while the project is still being iterated.

You know what's an awesome programming language? Fennel (and by extension, Lua, which Fennel transpiles to) I decided I don't want a unit testing library and chose to write my own barebones test runner. It took <5 min to hand-code. #lua #fennel #programming

It was pretty easy: 1. Create a table containing keys for all your test modules, and values as empty tables. 2. Define test functions inside each "module" by putting them inside aforementioned keys. 3. Do a nested loop to run through all functions, pcall-ing them and printing results.

npm increasingly feels like a zombie org under GitHub. As someone who's been around the JS ecosystem and part of multiple OSS orgs for years, what I'm seeing isn't just "big co moves slow." It's quiet neglect of critical infrastructure the entire JS world runs on. A short thread 🧵

I sat in my garden for five hours today looking at nature and dipping into crosswords every now and then and it was glorious can highly recommend.

The killer feature of Lisps is not macros or structural editing (though those are nice too). The killer feature is REPL-driven development. Writing and testing code are not separate stages; they are intertwined. It's a completely different way to program. #lisp #programming

I feel Lua deserves far more attention than it gets. It's fast and light while still being powerful and expressive, but too many folks tend to relegate it to a config language status. Remember, Balatro is written in Lua.
