We need US Constitutional amendments. Like: No state shall inhibit the right to vote. All voting will be converted to vote by mail to assure the credibility of safe and secure voting, and the USPS will be refortified & maintained as a social service into perpetuity w/ a fleet of vehicle & planes.

I think this law may be intended to generate a test case to challenge Citizens United. To get a case to the Supreme Court you need a non-moot case or controversy, or at least that used to be true. Would be better if Congress just reforms campaign financing, but alas, our government is broken.

Maine voted on PAC changes 2 years ago, crafted to challenge citizens united. It's going through the courts now. I'm not hopeful for any of these changes until the court is different 💔

Congress did pass campaign finance reform years ago &SCOTUS used a case about a defamatory video to go well beyond the scope of that case to declare money as speech, open the floodgates, & create dark money shelters so the donors are never disclosed Until you reign in SCOTUS new laws are pointless

Also, most PAC money is funneled through shell corporations and LLCs with no disclosure so the law won't stop a single large corporati9n from flooding the zone... But it will stop small businesses from attempting to compete with the corporate giants It's great in theory, but unenforceable

I've heard multiple analyses of how to reform SCOTUS & while expansion is 1 solution, term limits on a 2yr replacement cycle not only balance appointments, but would remove Thomas, Alito, & Roberts which re-balances the court Then there's ethics rules with criminal penalties for taking bribes,

I will happily accept all the Blue ones. Start shutting citizens united down. 1/50 is better than 0/50. More than 1 is even better. Yes Republicans are criminals who care only about themselves and will let everyone else die so that they can live in their perceived luxury.

Not trying to be totally negative. But I am getting more and more angry about the lack of meaningful progress America has achieved in the last half century. It must stop.

This is great. But the right of the people to limit or outright ban the use of money to buy political influence NEEDS to be constitutionalized. We've created a comprehensive amendment that does exactly that... and so much more. Find out more at amendamerica.org

Every single state should have such a bill in process. If your's doesn't I suggest you consider voting out the incumbents & electing ones who have gone on record promising to do so. Then keep their feet to the fire to ensure they do.

1. Suppose you, the reader, wanted to spend your own money to take out a full page ad in the NY Times against a GOP candidate. But, you aren't allowed because only political parties are allowed to spend money to do this - by law. Would you then claim money=speech? I would.

2. The point is, this is complex. I think we need to do the hard work of a Constitutional Amendment capping the amount of money that can be spent on political speech in a given year. However, any curb on money as speech will have undesirable consequences.

3. Media capture will be one of them. That is to say, people like Elon, Zuckerberg, Ellison, and Bezos buying up both legacy and modern media would become even more of a problem. One which would need addressing before we do any curbs.

I guess Hawaii is imune to RW talk radio. For 35 yrs 1500 coordinated radio stations have screamed: "corporations are people", "money is speech", unions contribute more than corporations, regulation will increase cable costs, etc., and it worked great to get Citizens United

An important legal tactic, but might there be unintended consequences? Could this law bar public interest groups like Common Cause, Public Citizen, or Planned Parenthood from spending money to influence political campaigns?

The one percent better get their 💩 together bsky.app/profile/ched...

Yeah right. Maine VOTED to limit PAC contributions 2 years ago and it was immediately challenged and will go to the Supreme Court because of course, it goes against citizens united 😡
