Mamdani has announced that NYC restaurants can have outdoor dining all year round. This is actually a big public health win because fall and winter is when respiratory virus cases surge. Dining outdoors helps reduce the risk of disease spread.

Rain or shine, sun or snow, you can now break bread outdoors year-round. Thanks to @cmrestler.bsky.social’s work, our favorite restaurants will no longer have to tear down and rebuild their setups each year. It’s official: Outdoor dining is here to stay.

Seems like this would be true as long as it's implemented within the true spirit of outdoor dining, as opposed to those plastic bubbles/domes that were used early in the pandemic. Although I suppose even that would reduce exposure somewhat, and be better than nothing.

I live in south central PA and know how cold it can get in the winter months and I doubt I'd want to eat outside when it is below 20 degrees. But I also know how many winter days can be sunny and mild.

In most places they don't encroach on the sidewalks, which would be an ADA violation. They take up space formerly used for parking or for spots that would be illegal to park in.

Yeah, ADA compliance has gotten a lot better since 2020, so now most do not block sidewalks and the dining areas in parking spaces are a lot nicer. This policy will help keep things improving.

The only issue I have with outdoor dining is when it extends into the street so far that it's impossible to get a wheelchair past. Restaurants need to improve their awareness of that and leave enough space.
