"Today we are holding a carnival, to which everyone has to bring a partner wearing some form of disguise, so that one man will be dressed up as a bear, another as a savage, and so on and so forth." from #TheDecameron by Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375)

A German postage stamp, issued in honor of Karneval in the city of Cologne. The festivities are overseen by His Craziness, the Carnival Prince, while the 'Prinzengarde' make an utter mockery of military discipline.

#MosaicMonday – Roman mosaic depicting Orpheus taming wild animals with his lyre, from ancient Karalis (Cagliari, Sardinia). Made by North African craftsmen in the late 3rd century AD, it once decorated a thermal room. Discovered in 1762, only fragments survive. Museo di Antichità, Turin.

Mayor @joshuajfriedman.com, IDK if it's a known issue, but scrolling on my Android device is weird right now. If I click into a post, and then return to the TL, it almost always brings me back to the top of the feed, rather than where I left off. This seems to be feed-agnostic Bluesky problem.

Getulio Vargas, who was president of #Brazil during the 1930s & 40s, was an authoritarian who did much to undermine vestiges of democracy his country. But ultimately, 🇧🇷 proved the only independent South American country to send combat troops against nazis and Italian fascists in Europe.

From Wikpedia on the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in WWII 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 'Before the FEB entered combat, the expression "a cobra vai fumar" ("the snake will smoke") was often used in Brazil in a context similar to "when pigs fly"; soldiers in the division subsequently called themselves Cobras Fumantes'

The Bahian Guitar is descended from the solid body pau eletrico, or “electric log”, created in the 1940s by Osmar Macedo and Adolfo “Dodo” Nascimento. Most musicologists agree that it was developed independently of the instruments designed by Les Paul and Leo Fender in the USA. 🇧🇷🎸🇧🇷🎸🇧🇷

From the discourse, it seems that Smashing Pumpkins once meant a LOT to many more people than I thought. 🧐 This is odd to me. They formed when I was in college, so I guess I was their target demographic. But there were *so* many more interesting hip-hop, grunge, and "alternative" acts at the time.

This is actually a serious-ish question. I've been avoiding it since the scare a while back, but can anybody confirm they've had a salad Labor Day???
