Please share: I'm writing an article and I want to talk to developers who have successfully transitioned out of the games industry to jobs elsewhere. What do you do now? How did you sell yourself? What skills were transferable? All disciplines welcome, my DMs are open.

There's an industry of medical VR training simulators that need people capable of working with real-time game engines in the low VR spec. There's already a bunch of ex game devs at my studio and more at my last studio doing the same.

I moved from web and mobile games to the adtech used to monetize them, and from there to financial services and most recently cloud observability. The through-line was sequenced, high-volume realtime streaming and matching algorithms (common to all spaces) with a side of UX and design thinking.

I'm a program manager now but I've been a producer or PM in tech my whole career specifically so I could work in or out of games as needed. This gone well for the most part until tech started imploding.

Seeing the same. So far the only feedback I've gotten is that my game dev experience is not seen as relevant to their industry. Dude. It's software. It's Project Management. The widgets produced are different, but it's not that different

Also... and I never say this... games are the most complex type of software there is right now (except maybe for whatever powers LLMs). Several times more complex than the software that sends rockets into space. I'm sure I can PM your mobile app no problem :P

Not my story, but I know 3D modeling skills can be highly valued in engineering. My friend got headhunted by a serious engineering company because of her 3D modeling experience

I often wonder about this, in particular for non programmer / non PM jobs. What do game designers do, outside of the games industry ? Same goes for artists. Even though there are artists in non interactive media, the work pipelines are not the same. And other creative industries are struggling too

I went from 9 years of game dev to 4 years of being completely unable to find anyone willing to hire me in any field, so seeing how others coped with it could give me some scant hope.
