This week at Finnish Games Week I was asked to give three sessions across three different conferences I decided I didn't want to just give three versions of my standard talks. I wanted to do something a bit more ambitious I decided to tell a story across the week Three sessions, one narrative arc

Three sessions - three acts - telling one story. - A call to action - A confrontation - And a (hopeful) resolution I hope it landed. I hope it was better than just giving three disconnected sessions. But hey. If you want to innovate, you have to try new things right? 😅

Finally for @wlovegames.bsky.social, we talked in more technical grounded terms about the distinctions between GenAI and Game AI and the opportunities that remain. That - if we can get past the capitalist hype bubble - there _might_ be useful ways to apply the technology that are additive to games

For IGDA Finland's Leadership Day I set a star in the sky. We talked about the need for Innovation, the requirement to push ourselves to try new things and push ok n the boundaries of what our medium has ever done. And there was actionable advice about how to structure that for (eventual) success

The first edition of Roll For Innovation, my bi-weekly(ish) newsletter is now available! Session Zero provides a grounding and tried to explain the why of the thing. I'd love if you gave it a read and maybe a subscribe <3 roll4innovation.ghost.io/session-zero/

This has GOT to be malicious compliance by a social media manager right? Please????

I had to go on Twitter to confirm this was real because Ship Awesome Games In A Weekend having a hand with six fingers was so on the nose I was about to pass out

I've been putting off setting up the @ludicai.games website for weeks now. I'd halfheartedly bashed at Wordpress a bit. Thank you PHP-pocalypse for letting me ignore that bit of my todo list guilt-free today :D

That's me! I'll be at ITU Copenhagen next week to talk about street photography, games and procedural generation - an extended version of the talk I gave last weekend at Roguelike Celebration. Looking forward to meeting everyone. 📸

On October 30th, Mike Cook @mtrc.bsky.social , who has written a beautiful book about computers, games, and play (www.bloomsbury.com/us/next-leve...), will be talking about “Photographic Perspectives on Generative Systems”.

Hello! I'm looking to speak to: 1. Devs involved in the decompilation scene who can speak to how the community has been affected by AI. 2. Devs who have or suspect they have had their game copied by AI vibe coders. If either of those is you, contact me at rick@ricklane.co.uk. Shares appreciated!

Folks - is it enough to update my nginx rules to deny remote access to my PHP sites until I get chance to update them? It feels like addressing at the rev-proxy level ought to be safe but wanted to gut check

I'm begging every journalist covering AI to take the words "could", "might", and "may" out of your vocabulary. What does it do today? What are the capabilities TODAY? Stop writing fanfiction for businesses

I just snarfed in a restaurant

I'm happy to say that my new outfit @ludicai.games is gathering steam! I'm in a weird place where, with my background, I can't get away from the AI term professionally. But I can do what I can to reclaim it from the techbros. Players first. The right tool for the right job. All-AI not just Gen AI.

I genuinely think we should collectively stop engaging in industry awards at the "Intellectual Property" level. Celebrate teams and individuals. Not some corporate-owned paintjob that's going to be applied to whatever hollowed out remains of a team are left after the next layoffs hit

Major corporations should be saying "we have the teams to win" not "we have the IP to win" (or apparently, not). As much as I've always hated the auteur framing, at least it acknowledged that (some of) the individuals weren't interchangeable cogs

IP is fucking meaningless. IP is only as good as the last game in the franchise. IP is momentum-based. Teams maintain that momentum.

The children yearn to engage with the brands 🙄

"Players want to engage with brands, not just consume them" – Mattel on its new Game Studios arm, why it's releasing on Roblox, and what it learnt from NetEase https://bit.ly/4Bfw48M

I'm getting a _crazy_ amount of ads for this in on insta and hearing it's all the rage now in SF to plan data sale into company closure math. Feels like scraping the bottom of the private data barrel generally. Doesn't bode well for future training of models. Quoth Clarkson: "Oh no. Anyway..."

My room in Helsinki has an en suite sauna, which I partook of this afternoon. How does this society function? How does anything get done? You can just... feel this cozy and relaxed??? This is worse than all the people trying weed when they come to GDC.

The Tesla roadster doing James Bond shit with compressed air thrusters is a neat little stunt but also incredibly stupid if you think about it for more than three seconds, but that clears the bar for making the tech press and investors bark like seals

Its remarkable that Siobhan does not seem to have deleted her account. The second I become the main character, I promise you I am GONE.

I really enjoyed having to think through the questions @lpcantlose.bsky.social posed as part of this interview. It was definitely part of my pivot to worrying about the big picture societal implications of this GenAI crap - and wonderful to cross digital paths with @coppolaemilio.com as well!

Truly excellent couple of days in London speaking at Kings and QMUL. Really enjoyed reconnecting with researchers who represent some of my oldest roots in Game AI <3

She should maybe get aligned with her boss who just two weeks ago was bragging about how great Xbox will do because of their existing IP

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has reportedly warned that the organisation will "not survive" if it relies on existing game franchises www.gamesindustry.biz/xbox-ceo-rep...

Asha Sharma announces Xbox Labs, a new internal R&D team that will "build in the open", spurred by recent user mashups and ports created using AI tools: www.gamesindustry.biz/xbox-announc...

Should this unit exist? Abso-fucking-lutely, how did it not already???? Should it be made as some sort of reactionary play in response to trendy AI zeitgeist bullshit? Fucking NO Christ.

Many thanks to @luked.bsky.social for coming to talk to King’s today about AI, why it used to be cool, and how it came to be how it is today. Luke is currently touring around a few spots in Europe, including @qmul.bsky.social tomorrow! It was really nice to have some balanced industry insight.

I think being quoted this month right next to Tarn in Edge magazine is a career highlight. What a truly lovely bloke. Check out this awesome article

The happiest man in gaming hates generative AI. Dwarf Fortress creator Tarn Adams discusses bloated AI code, vampire computers, and surviving on Steam. https://bit.ly/4en1cJF
