🧵One important thing about right-wing culture that people who have never been a part of it don't get is that to most Republican loyalists, their religion is America. They truly believe that the country's creators were directly inspired by God. To write critically of the founders is blasphemy.

I grew up in a right-wing evangelical household. The reverence that was given to the founders is straight up on par with what Catholics give to Mary. It was always an unspoken truism that the founders were divinely inspired by god. When I left religion, I deconstructed both my religious views, and

the ultranationalist patriotism that I had grown up with. People outside of right-wing culture don’t understand how deeply embedded their religious beliefs have been intertwined with nationalism and jingoism.

Yes, media are very important in making conservatives feel safe. FDR's fireside chats really were a great example of this. He was there for the people constantly, explaining what he was doing, why he was doing it, and how people could help and have hope. Democrats lost this vital history.

Fireside chats wd be great. Tho, since MOST media/SMedia are RWng, RWng media wd convince MOST ppl that was a lib echo chamber, as they did w BSky. Which is why it's also necessary to buy/create more truthful media. So there's more media spreading truth than lies upine.medium.com/time-to-solv...?

(NOT blind to the reality, vs the aspiration, of that religion and scripture. But the aspiration has really mattered, across the world and across centuries.)

This is why the second Trump administration has been so obsessively bent on censoring museums, monuments, the Smithsonian Institution, and federal grants to historians. But this viewpoint is not one that they articulate in public. Like most reactionary beliefs, it is only expressed in safe spaces.

They very much adhere to the belief that their poorly researched opinions are eternal truths and so therefore to discuss them in public or to subject them to debate is "casting pearls before swine," as Jesus put it. You are the swine, just in case you didn't realize it.

It's ironic that American right-wingers are often obsessed with Islamic taqiyya, but they are also very fond of the pearls scripture, and also other cases of prophetic deception, such as Abraham pretending to be his wife's brother while in Egypt. The overlaps between fundamentalisms are numerous:

flux.communityWhite nationalists and jihadists are starting to realize they have a lot in common - FluxExtremism researcher Moustafa Ayad talks about how religious extremists from across the world are starting to come together, and what that means for the rest of us

Journalists covering reactionaries often don't realize that most of their public statements are just for show. The far right was doing the "truthful hyperbole" thing long before Trump, including the famous incident of a Bush 43 official claiming that liberals are in the "reality-based community."

It is basically a separate faith with designated priests whose opinions can't be logically dissected just believed. I wasn't raised conservative but being chronically online since the early 2000's meant spending a lot of time fending off conservative magical thinking...

There is something alluring about this way of living. My father is a lifelong democrat and so was my grandfather but years of being on the road made Rush Limbaugh a presence in my life. Not laudatory, listening made my father intensely mad, but being able to tap into that anger kept him coming back.

The little Rush I've subjected myself to made it clear his allies got the same thing out of his program, they were allowed to be angry and it made them feel good PLUS they didn't have to decide what to believe they just referenced his program when challenged. Similar to talking to Roganites.

For a lot it is also just their "tribe". Like being a Cowboys fan or Dodgers fan. It is what you grew up with and you can't imagine anything else. Like what Cowboy's fan would ever vote for the Chiefs? And in the south there is also an enormous racial element too. The GOP is just the white tribe.

This is a result of the failure of the confederacy. They needed a construct that would appeal to all whites, beyond the south, so they designed a propaganda campaign, changed school & university curriculum incl the pledge and more all w the goal to return to nation to pre civil war government,
