I apologize to the reader, if I didn't post the bad thoughts they would fester in my brain and cause permanent damage. The only things I have useful knowledge of are fly fishing and building codes.

At this point Anthropic is already sucking up a huge chunk of the available cash, has a viable product, is already scaling, and has already thoroughly worked its way into the tech industry. Why do they need an IPO?

Nothing in You Can See Everything changes Holmes' guilt, the only problem it reveals is how few people like, and worse than, her are not in jail for fraud.

Alternatively if you believe in your concept, that the quality of your work will stand on its own, and trust the tool that helped you make it then being labeled as "Made With AI" would help establish the legitimacy of its use to the general public...

This is the most optimistic thing you'll read all day, it provides multiple actionable options for helping pull people back into the workforce such as: regulating vice, providing job training, raising wages and benefits, and generally being more proactive and empathic to people who are struggling...

This is the most depressing thing you’ll read today. They’ve dropped out of the workforce because being unemployed isn’t so bad if you can just stay high and play games and watch porn.

I'm not optimistic about Democrats leaning left. I knew far too many amateur political scientists who were suit-curious during the 2020 primaries. Many democrats I knew didn't vote their conscience they voted for what they felt was most likely to beat Trump because they are traumatized.

Any group as traumatized as the American left is going to make bad impulsive decisions. Our communal brain space is so dominated by attacks on government, culture, society, and members of our communities that we aren't voting for what we want we are voting for whatever is least likely to hurt us.

For one thing, these aren’t like tweets from a conspiracy theorist game show host, this costs a ton of money and actual resources just to mount the effort even if it’s a destined to fail prong in the vast gop and trump effort to steal elections Just the act of doing it is an expensive scandal...

Most billionaire wealth isn't in yachts or jewelry — that's just a few percent of it. Most is productive business capital: companies that employ people, build things, and fund research. Tax that wealth and you're taxing the businesses that employ us all. Cato's Adam Michel explains.

I have officially watched too many horror movies. I just walked into the break room and one of my coworkers was standing still in the corner of the room facing away from me and I was fully preparing myself to sprint out of the room once she started chasing me...

As one of the candidates featured in these polls - the infamous one in late June that showed me plummeting into single digits (which was at odds with our internals) - here's the impact of this "experiment"

Over many years of adverse conditioning I no longer feel any urge to check my email or physical mail, I rarely answer calls and I've turned off all app and text notifications on my phone because of all the spam texting over the last few months...

So far I've watched Weapons, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Shaun of the Dead, Halloween H2O, and Dawn of the Dead. It has also been a good season for new horror; Evil Dead, Resident Evil and Other Mommy were all solid. Next is...I think Train to Busan, Heretic and Cabin in the Woods.

I don't think I'll get through the annual standard early enough to move onto Halloween TV episodes, I really like diving into the Halloween Buffy episodes. #spookyseason

This conversation demonstrates the futility of long form writing about Trump. He lies so consistently and about critical and trivial things that short form content is the only way to consistently report on it without losing people's attention. Fact checking and massaging phrasing blunts the impact.

Here's the video in which NYT assistant managing editor Patrick Healy and I go back and forth about whether "lie" should be a forbidden word in Trump coverage. (You can guess where I stand.)

🧵🧵🧵 The NY Times posted a 15-minute video today in which I got to tell NYT what’s wrong with its coverage. They said they saw my critical posts on Bluesky and invited me to do a video with them to air my grievances. Weird, right? I didn’t hold back. I blasted their sanewashing of MAGA extremism.

I think this is entirely a function of our technological environment. When our free time was precious there was an incentive to use it for productive and useful things. When its abundant its value goes down and there's no incentive to be productive with it.

If your only time to read news was during breakfast, your commute, dinner, etc then you would use that time to inform yourself. If you have a phone attached to you all the time with constant access to information you will find yourself consuming trash because...why not?

Goddamn its been 25 years and one of my coworkers just said "The building has steel beams" and it took all my self control not to say "I hope they aren't planning to store jet fuel in it"...

I guess it's a good thing I only play Bloons TD 6 and Vampire Survivors...

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

Oldest on the left, newest on the right. I started the newest one and forgot to eat dinner. I got some real nice colors from the applewood purely by accident but now I know what to look for when splitting billets in the future.

Now I just have to figure out where orchard owners hang out so I can befriend one and stock up on new fresh cut wood... Seems like a Hood River kind of task for after the fall salmon run is over.

I don't want to lose real money or crypto I don't own to slots apps on my phone. No matter how many weird AI ads yell at me every single day nothing seems more depressing than wasting my time on my couch swiping at my pho...

It really frustrates me how often I key into a post about Trump/Republicans, think "Noice, gottem" and then realize its The Bulwark... It appears to require conservatives to appropriately punch up on other conservatives.

Anand Giridharadas: Cities are very unfairly labeled as these 'problem centers' by Donald Trump. One thing worth remembering is a large chunk of those people who end up in cities were failed in other parts of this country. We are holding a lot of your people who you failed to love and take care of.
