One of the most salient divisions in American urban politics is between people who choose to live in cities because they actually like urban life and temporarily embarrassed suburbanites.

Lmfao now a *republican* city councilmember is in my replies defending Kayla (a Democrat) for being a NIMBY the biggest dividing line in NYC is not Democrat vs Republican but it’s people who like New York vs. outer borough chuds who wished they lived in the Dallas suburbs

I genuinely do not understand people who want to drive everywhere and park for free at their destination but insist on living in San Francisco, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. The other 99.5% of the country has what you want with much lower housing prices. Move there!

A non-cynical answer I hear a lot is that a lot of people would rather live in car-centric suburbs but the suburbs often lack the liberal politics, laissez-faire attitudes, and job opportunities of cities.

and especially in the context of west side san francisco, where self-identified progressives have convinced themselves that doing conservative things—like promoting car culture, tearing out bike lanes, defunding public transit, and idealizing suburbia—is progressivism as long as they do it Wokely

Yep. I love my single family home and not paying for parking. Although, in South FL, most yards are way too big and parking lots are often bigger than they need to be too. Wouldn't mind seeing suburban neighborhoods rezoned so small businesses and 5-story housing are mixed into our neighborhoods.

A classic case of chuds not understanding what makes their lives good. They imagine cities as playgrounds and amusement parks, not places people live. The other 99% of the country is boring, but they don't understand that it's boring because it has what they want.

The places you mention all have great lifestyle amenities: arts organizations, libraries, book stores, fine dining, niche retail, etc. When I first moved to Austin, I was legit shocked at how bad the food was here. It's gotten better but if I had money to burn, I'd enjoy burning it in SF way more.

Years ago I remember a marketing video from a town in…Arkansas I think?…that was entirely about how much free surface parking they had downtown. A perfect haven for free and abundant parking freaks!
