now here's the thing: it is of course completely reasonable for someone to be skeptical of cars on the ground that they are *dangerous*, but anyone who says they are *useless* is obviously very dumb AI denialists seem not to have grasped this distinction yet

Can you imagine if CA/the country had done this when interest rates were near zero

Governor Newsom Press Office@govpressoffice.gov.ca.gov

>> @governor.ca.gov Gavin Newsom signed 4 new California laws that “aim to speed student housing construction by exempting projects from environmental review, curbing certain lawsuits and offering developer incentives.”

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Another person who is good at deception of this nature: Donald Trump. Trump is a moron with no special insight into humans, but he’s capable of saying stupid and wrong stuff confidently (in part because he’s detached from reality) and that’s quite literally all you need to sucker half the world.

Again, what I want you to realize is that THIS IS NOT REALLY EXPERT MANIPULATION. Elizabeth Holmes did not succeed at fraud by telling convincing hard-to-detect lies. She succeeded at fraud by telling big, dumb, obvious lies that rich people wanted to believe. This is how 95% of fraud works!

James Downie@jamescdownie.bsky.social

There is extensive documentary evidence that she knowingly misled people, including by her own admission! (www.ms.now/opinion/eliz...)

I feel like the AI consciousness debate is getting too "weed smoke-filled dorm room" for me. yeah it's kinda interesting but it's hard to really go anywhere with it in a way that feels like you're making progress.

remember the world cup, when you had tons of folks visiting the united states for the first time and having just the best time of their life? it ruled! we should encourage that kind of thing!

Anyone else feel like everyone is just nuts nowadays? I'm not even talking about the obvious candidates but everyday people who get worked up into a defensive frenzy about the most insane things and can't fathom that they might be wrong or that someone else might think differently.

Something very important to figure out before Jan 20, 2029 is whether, when a new President is inaugurated, they will control the computer system at GSA (i.e. doors to federal buildings) and Treasury payments system or if those systems will be somehow in the hands of DOGE cronies

I swear to god so much of this is literally just people confusing measles and chicken pox

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Minnesota Republican state Sen. Bill Lieske: "Back in the day when the measles vaccine didn't exist, measles was a joke! ... yes, there are increases cases. How many of those are actually resulting in deaths? Are they just going home with the sniffles? Back in the day, people had measles parties."

Seeing things like "Chinese youth unemployment is 18.9%"is why I feel more than a little insane when young people talk about how much better China is than the US

Alexander Clarkson@aphclarkson.bsky.social

On that note, I have never in 25 years of doing this stuff seen such a divergence in analysis between scholars focused on a state's domestic political economy and colleagues focused on its impact on global geopolitics and trade as with scholarship focused on China over the last five years

Weird how Republican lists of bad people to deport never, ever, ever includes neo-Nazis, segregationists, apartheidists, or any other white nationalists.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "The Republican Party, we believe that Somalia bandits, third-world gangs, and jihadist sympathizers do not belong in Ohio, they do not belong in America. We got to get them the hell out of here." More "De-port! De-port!" chants from the crowd.

hard to think of anything that better sums up the modern Republican Party than this note right here

I swear to god this is a replacement of the original meme, but a quick search doesn't show that one up.

While I’m making people mad by claiming consumers get what they want, a lot of consumers really do like big houses with no lot lines in the exurbs. Good urban form exists in lower quantities than demand for it but I think exurban housing has a very high demand and that’s why there’s so much of it.

I think what people who never live outside of NYC / LA / SF / DC / etc. don't understand is that a non-zero number of Americans are like this and it's not because of "cognitive impairment."

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

I recommend people read this to get a sense of the president's grave cognitive impairment. Trump is either unwilling or unable (or maybe both) to answer the questions he's actually asked, so he just rants and raves while the interviewers do their best to provide structure to his random brain firings

Also, because I now realize it might not be clear — that is perfectly acceptable!! Not great, but it is what it is, and most people like this aren't doing it out of malice. The key is, you know... DON'T MAKE SOMEONE LIKE THIS PRESIDENT OF THE USA!!!

🚨Exclusive🚨: I have exculpatory evidence in what is easily the dumbest congressional oversight episode of the year...maybe the decade. I was at the Iowa v. MD game & just looked at my pics & sure enough, someone who looks like Jack Smith is sitting in Sec 109, Row 1. Complete & total vindication!

"the war," like "the economy," is the kind of thing that you can only ever really know about via mediation--via what other people are telling you--and this is especially magnified for the ordinary rando.

A lot of this shit, like every query draining a lake, is akin to a religious belief at this point and they’re not gonna be reasoned out of position they weren’t reasoned into. We have two flavors of AI psychosis now basically.

One thing that encourages me is that despite individual Democrats capitulating on trans rights, I think if the polling holds, we will elect the most pro-trans congress and senate in US history.

There was a post on here that I forgot to bookmark of a video where seniors were being shown AI videos and the reasoning they were using was based on plausibility rather than visual clues—anyone able to find this post for me? 🤞

Okay, I made a chart, it's every month since 1977. The blue line is how many people are citing high prices as a reason for worse finances in the U Mich consumer survey. The orange line is the annualized change in CPI. Do you see how the very close correlation MASSIVELY BREAKS DOWN in 2022?

I need younger generations to understand how weird it is that trump is such a unique terrible fuck up that it’s actually correct to blame the president for a demonstrably shittier economy and costs
