the thought of either the UAE candidate or Orban as plausible candidates as Secretary General shows just how much key states want to destroy the UN, the promise of the Charter, & a future that centers human rights.

This is why I've been enforcing for myself a strategy of not quoting (or screenshotting!) posts I disagree with. I recommend as a way to break the habit just replying and then rting your own reply.

Brazilians recommending not to amplify right-wing talking points by dunking and quoting, as a winning strategy Next day, my tl is full of people dunking on rfk jr I literally would not have seen the bigotry if it wasn't for y'all repeating it. That's exactly what the Brazilians were on about!

I'm now imagining a whole pantheon that you have to proactively invoke for different flaws that you know your code contains. Athena forgives this lack of wisdom. Thor forgives this waste of electricity. Shennong forgives this lack of test coverage

Trump stole hundreds of billions of dollars from us and handed it to his friends at the oil companies. We pay, they prosper. Trump take gas

Trump: While oil prices are temporarily high, our oil and gas industry is making hundreds of billions of dollars. My people said, "please don't mention that, sir."

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

I think it's really as shrimple as that the financial incentives for companies who host models are to charge you for more tokens. Revenue is driven by doing more without asking. That's why auto mode was turned on by default.

Side note if you want to know why companies may at some point move to self-hosted open weights models, this is an excellent breaking point. Smarter, more concise models that do more in less tokens will be the holy grail and the corporate models will diverge into verbose "job security code".

Honestly this is a really concise and insightful take that captures a lot of my feelings about AI.

The interface to AI is all wrong for the unsophisticated user who does not understand how ML/AI works. It is designed to give you a definitive answer. That is the wrong interface.

People don’t understand why I keep noting that BlueSky is not a bubble, it is a counterpublic. It serves its own organizational function: you can see in realtime in January 2025, on multiple types of social media, shouting that an executive order is instruction to an agency. This one stuck.

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

That's it. I've had it with you. I'm sending you a very quiet voice note so you turn up your volume to 100% just to hear what I'm saying and then forget to turn it back down and get blasted by the next youtube video you watch.

lolno the workers abandoned the Democrats for Getting Too Woke about civil rights and the Vietnam War, take your own advice and read a book

Dave Strock@davestrock.bsky.social

People don't vote to punish. That's just not a thing in the head of anyone but people making excuses. The Dems have overseen decades of policies that saw workers increasingly abandoned for the PMC who were allowed to take over the remaining institutions. Dems were either complicit or incompetent

People like Matt Yglesias treat the militarized border as an unchangeable reality and an automatic political loser when in reality it is an incredibly recent lurch to the right whose consequences are now in full view of the citizenry.

software engineering has had a mentorship/training Problem for a while (and a Valuing Product Management Problem, too) and they're both about to get MUCH much worse

There is a real problem (SEs are NOT obsolete, and the specific skillsets that aren't obsoleted are the architect skillsets that are hard to teach and in fact not really taught academically and without entry-level engineers, nobody will be turning into architects) which gets misinterpreted as this

where is the idea that AI is like Uber (where they are heavily subsidising the consumer-end product in order to Disrupt Markets and Get Everyone Hooked, only to plan to raise prices later) coming from? is this an Ed Zitron article of faith? it SOUNDS like an Ed Zitron article of faith

Not "AI is getting people addicted to it so they can rug pull" because honestly I'm about to have my employer buy some runpod credits so we can share a vLLM running an open weights model on an H200. No, the problem is that the gap between vibe coding and making real software with LLMs is huge.

It is not "conservative ideology" to note an undeniable fact that young men are opting out of work because being unemployed is no longer a miserable thing but a lifestyle.

Triangulators didn't convert a pure trans-friendly Labour to transphobia- a "trans-friendly" Labour never existed! You have ALWAYS been rife with SWERF/PERF/TERFs in a way the US simply isn't - because our axis isn't "exclusionary" it's simply right-aligned bigotry!

In the least critical way possible, Blexas has always had existential stakes. If you live anywhere in America you likely know Texans personally who left mostly because the state is deadly hostile to them and their loved ones. It does not get higher than the risk continuation of the status quo.

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

The race to replace Ken Paxton as attorney general of Texas is a contest that has way bigger stakes than you might assume from the outside www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

Again this is simply rewriting history. Single-sex exemptions to the Equality Act were in 2010 under Gordon Brown. Labour consistently elevated TERFs to leadership with a palatable left-friendly "feminist" transphobia. The self-id reforms were under the May government for Christ's sake!!

Gregg@gcgsmith.bsky.social

Labour was indeed pro-trans in the 2010s and flipped during the past five years, and Americans on the left are right to worry about the same happening to the Dems.
