unless the caveat is a detriment like comma separated var values not spreading to multiple arguments when calling a custom function. That caveat freaking sucks.

it is the only place in all of CSS where vars don't effectively expand in place. It makes no sense, it's frustrating, and it's a colossal nerf with a single counter argument: desire to cater to non-CSS devs. Anders had it solved moments before shipping without it: issues.chromium.org/issues/39020...

Humans crave certainty and while it provides a certain comfort in the moment it creates far more pain and suffering than accepting the gray. Strong opinions, loosely held.
