Hi Vale! As someone who has been a massive proponent of "build in public" I held your belief for so many years. But large-scale scraping by the AIs has changed everything for me. I'm not interested in just being fodder for the LLMs. Recently I've been getting into dfos.com by @metalabel.bsky.social

Makes me sad when people stop maintaining personal websites for the reason that AI will scrape it. Bad people might visit it but that wasn't reason to stop. Make great stuff and share it. Killing your site hurts people more that it hurts AI, and keeping it benefits people more than it benefits AI.

Synchronicity. If the Universe wishes you to succeed, then it will conspire for you to succeed. Novelist as a Vocation by Murakami.

I've been here on bsky for 2yrs and literally post every single day. There are supposedly 40 million ppl here on bsky. But virtually no one engages with me. They just scroll. Over 600 days of continuous posting and <10 replies. Meanwhile, on dfos, in <2 months, we've already set up a reading club.

I love posting but ultimately I'm online to meet kindred spirits and make friends. I'm here to make human connection and wish to meet ppl IRL. I would trade 100 million followers for a single friend & Idc ab followers. I am currently in the process of retreating from the public internet entirely.

We should stop thinking about software as anything other than getting the computer to do what we want it to do for us

Murakami on novelists ๐Ÿ˜‚ "Almost all [novelists] live under the assumption that 'my way is right while virtually all other writers are wrong'."

Received my Osprey Nebula 32L today! (REI is currently offering them on sale!!) Ty, @pds.dad for the recommendation!! Love how it looks and looking forward to trying it out!! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰ (I'm currently contemplating walking across the country Jack Reacher-style and this is the backpack I would use!! ๐ŸŽ’๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšถ)

Donโ€™t think they do one. Thank you tho! Enjoy your new bag and let me know how it does!

rayne fisher-quann quoting the famous Walter Benjamin line: "Fascism sees its salvation in giving the masses the ability to express themselves in lieu of granting them their rights." It's so true: everyone's expressing themselves 24/7 every day nowadays but none of it is going anywhere.

www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/labor-crea... Listening to this right now! A great discussion by Substack writers who actually make their livelihoods on the platform. Something that stuck with me" "We're all passing the same $5 around." h/t: Learned about this from slowcore! app.dfos.com/spaces/space...

An amazing post by Tom Beck, recommended by slowcore: paragraph.com/@driftless/w... "Art is important, but it is not valuable. Platforms are much better at capturing the value of the network than any individual nodes on that network (the artists)."

paragraph.comWhy Artists Can't Get PaidAn exploration of the structural problems that keep artists financially struggling despite unprecedented tools for creation and distribution. From winner-take-all dynamics to the passion premium, this...

x.com/cremieuxrecu... Married women, single women, and single men mostly make the same income. Married men far outearn everyone else though. Obviously, we can discuss causation vs correlation but imo it is massively causation. Speaking as a man, once I got married, my entire worldview changed.

www.wsj.com/politics/pol... Steve Davis cites Armageddon (1998) as the reason he pursued engineering. I have a living file where I keep tabs on everyone who publicly cites Armageddon (1998) as having a massive, life-changing influence on their life trajectory. I call it my "Armageddon file".

For the record: I post on bsky every day but I overwhelmingly use it as a daily chronicling/journaling tool. I'm seldom scrolling my feeds. The only posts I see are the ones that just may happen to be on my screen when I first open the app. I really encourage people to post more and scroll less!! โœ๏ธ

Maybe I'm just following the wrong ppl on bsky but one thing I love ab X is how I learn amazing new things on it. Content-wise (my feed, at least), X is ๐Ÿ’ฏ more diverse. I don't check X every day but every time I do, I'm wonderfully surprised w/ new knowledge. I'm going to start sharing my favorites.

Sapir-Whorf hypothesis in action. Language shapes everything! > The Wakashan Indians of the Pacific Northwest have a construct in their language that requires "evidentiality" to distinguish if its direct exp, inference, conjecture, or hearsay. x.comtimour kosters (@timourxyz) on XTIL there is a language where every sentence requires the speaker to provide 'evidentiality': are you making a claim from direct experience, inference, conjecture, or hearsay? Could use some of that...

They should ๐Ÿ’ฏ make a Robot Olympics. It would be similar to the DARPA Challenge. Every country would submit their absolute best robots to the global competition every four yrs and see which nation had the most engineering prowess. I would absolutely pay to show up at one of these events. Let's go!!๐Ÿค–

Awesome

"A hundred thousand years ago, there were people who stayed by the campfire and people who wandered. I'm pretty sure I'm a direct descendant of the wandering type. It's just who I am." I โค๏ธ our Tesla+FSD but watching Reacher has awakened something in me. Currently considering walking across America.

Love this so much. Carpet the American heartland with data centers for this! Seriously though, I've had variants of this kind of conversation w/ Claude countless times at this point. Posing all kinds of hypotheticals. I envy children growing up with Claude - a friend you can discuss anything with! ๐Ÿฅณ

Iโ€™m not really anti AI but I do think that I in particular shouldnโ€™t have access to this technology

"I have a dream that one day my art will be judged by the quality of its content and not the origin of its provenance. And when this happens, when we allow equality ring, when we let it ring from every village, from every state, every city, we will speed to the day we love all art without prejudice."

@pds.dad this is amazing! TY for sharing! I've had a North Face Recon backpack for over 10yrs which has basically bitten the dust (it's currently bleeding foam pellets and one even got into the vent of my MBP!!๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ) and so I'm looking for a new backpack. Money is no object. Any recs? Bsky, pls help!!๐Ÿ™

4 days, 3 nights one bag and it fits under the seat. Iโ€™ve made it gang

Going to start putting together a starter pack for people who are extremely AI-pilled. After all, like Gandhi said, "be the change you want to see in the world!" If you are extremely bullish on AI helping humanity and being an overall net good, please reply to this thread!! Help us find each other!

Love this! Rode in my first Waymo in 2024 in Phoenix and was instantly sold. This is undoubtedly the future. Huge win for the Chinese manufacturer Zeekr (Geely). I've never personally been in a Chinese EV but every time I see a review on YT, they look amazing. Big L for Jaguar+their I-Pace tho! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Chris Paxton@cpaxton.bsky.social

the first chinese car most americans ride in will be the nicest and most futuristic thing they have ever seen

Watched Spider-Man: BND! A decent entry in the Holland cannon though not as good as No Way Home, IMHO. (I consider NWH to be the best Spider-Man movie of all of them.) My favorite part of BND was when Peter was building legos, hanging out w/ Ned+MJ in their apt. We all need friends, even Spider-Man!

If a song's made with AI and you like it, it doesn't make much sense to me that you suddenly dislike it once you learn its provenance. I'm trying to think of other examples in media that are like this. Do you dislike a book automatically bc it's ghost written? Or dislike a replica over the original?

What will be super-interesting is when AI actually does cure cancer or do something really big that affects most normal ppl. Then people will need to genuinely reckon their hatred and resistance towards data centers with actual progress for humanity. Really looking forward to this inevitable moment.

In F1, there's a concept called driving "The Line": to race the most optimal path thru the track so you save precious ms off your lap time. Writing's the same. When I write I can go anywhere. A good novel, however, has one single perfect "Line" and it's my job to take readers on that specific ride.
