there's a lot going on right now, but the ability to buy elections in order to stay out of prison is on the ballot whether you realize it or not

I regularly see people using build tools to 'scope' CSS by adjusting selectors. And those same people claiming they don't see a use-case for at-scope. Can anyone explain to me the scoping use-case that you use tools for, but don't think at-scope can handle? #CSS

Both result in items laid out on a page. But a grid is an actual structure between the parent & siblings. Elements don't relate to each other, they relate through the grid. Flex items, like floats, are more just sloshing around in there. No internal layout structure to push off of, just elements.

I mean, flex items optionally wrap onto lines. It's technically not nothing. But it's the robust internal layout structure that makes grid powerful, and "2d" in more ways than just columns & rows, and possible to define in one place. While flex items have to work it out amongst themselves.

If you want to claim technology is neutral and what matters is how we use it… this is it. This is the "how we use it" part. These are brand name products built by companies, so ~5 of the worst men on Sir Tim's world wide public domain web can sell our own Redit posts back to us for profit.

Way too many people out here happy to "set aside the ethical considerations" indefinitely forever. Just don't worry about it, focus on new efficiencies. Gotta move even faster, if we want to break all these things.

Schrodinger's engineers say their geiger counter wired to a hammer over the poison vial might decide to kill some cats. Obviously there's only one way to fix the problem. We urgently need to improve the moral alignment of the geiger counter, so it makes the right choice!

It is truly wild to see a software company do press releases about their software being shitty, unpredictable, and unreliable like that's a good thing. We have a word for this, and it's malware.

I've enjoyed re-visiting "we created life & it killed us" fiction, asking "what if it's hype"? For the most part, the stories still work. Skynet could use a basic decision tree & still launch the nukes. But Dr. Frankenstein becomes an excellent unreliable narrator. Maybe he's lying the whole time?

Kalshi and Polymarket are bullshit sites for scammers and should be put out of business. Shame on every "legit" institution that's partnered with them.

This post is unavailable.

I haven't been following the light/dark toggle discussions, but my uninformed take is pretty simple: Stop Acting Like Design Decisions Have A Correct Answer (and then stop acting like the correct-answer machine is a real thing worth building)

My job as a designer is not always to make everything super simple and opinionated and correct, handed down on tablets from above – but to give people agency, and make complex choices approachable as part of an interface.

I love "it's just a tool" but we're talking about products with a brand name, while shoveling money in and hoping they give us the good payout. Levers are a tool. Slot machines are a product.

I had a lovely (very full) weekend working with these guys to help pull off their public performance: www.cpr.org/2026/08/13/l... They've been rehearsing for a year, but we only had two days in the gym – to set up, program cues, rehearse with tech, perform 4 shows, & load back out.

Going live in ~30m, see you there!

Next week, @stacykvernmo.com and I will be looking at dev tools again – talking about which browser we go to in which situations. Is there an inspector feature that you'll always switch browsers to use? Let us know! And join our live stream for an overview: www.youtube.com/watch?v=INqy... #css

Planning some yeti-lid-friendly tumblers, but I need to get the dimensions precise. These sauce bowls are trimmed to 1/16th-inch steps, to test shrinkage for this clay & glaze. Looks like I'll be aiming for 3 7/16" inside diameter after trimming. 😅 (3 10/16" ID wet)
