25 years ago, I did a gap year between college and grad school as an AmeriCorps VISTA and it was incredibly meaningful, plus gave me something other than lifeguarding, babysitting, and work study kitchen duty for my resume. Heartbroken for the program and these volunteers.

Yep, this administration and all those slimy fucks involved in it don't want to be giving any Christian charity to people, takes away money they could be putting into their pockets. Traitorous bastards.

As an alumna, NCCC was vital to my career, educational, and social development. We made real change to many underserved communities over the course of only 10 months. To this day, it is my greatest achievement.

I think I was at that food bank. Of course there could’ve been other food banks going yesterday in rural PA. It’s just that they told us we had some NGOs helping us this time, and at the end I noticed one of them crying. I wasn’t going to pry but maybe this explains it… Fuck.

When Dems are back in power because then they can blame the Dems for the mess they themselves created. The Dems should have a campaign ready with the slogan “Nope. Not us. It was the GOP.” And then follow up with receipts.

Oh, man. My daughter did 2 years of AmeriCorps. It was such a formative experience for her. She's now a very accomplished policy specialist working to expand Medicaid. She may not have that job for very long.

It's almost as though they're working to undermine any programs that involve civic engagement, mutual support, and community building. As if we needed more forces pushing us to fear and mistrust one another.

My time spent as an AmeriCorps volunteer was invaluable as I was getting back into the workforce after 10 years out. I met some of the most amazing people and dedicated workers. Their petty shortsightedness in cutting these programs is unbelievable (but not really, at this point).

one young person told me: “I want people to know about what they did to Americorps. For many of us, this was our way to pay for college, to get away from home, to figure out what to do with our lives, it was a big step. And they just ripped it out from under us without even a 2-week’s notice.”

We gotta stop calling these “DOGE” cuts. These program cuts most surely are signed off by that particular cabinet member. It’s on them, the admin, and congressional republicans. They all own it. Don’t let them off the hook with “It wasn’t us. It was DOGE.”

I need to turn off autocorrect. — First they* changed the name and made it stupid. — I think my typos would be preferable to autocorrect. Or I could just proofread instead of hitting “post” or “reply.” 😬

It sucks so much. I did it after I graduated from college in 2016 because I didn’t know what I was going to do after graduation. I did FEMACorps, and I still work for FEMA to this day. It changed my life for the better, I literally don’t know where I would be now without it

It’s shocking that Trump is killing off the very things that make this country good. I shouldn’t be shocked I guess, but each one of these stories hits me like new. And for what?
