Agree. I’d modify the “for profit” label slightly. The key is that while costs matter none of these should be optimized primarily for financial results. Public health, safety, education and journalism have other measures that must be primary and their governance should reflect those true purposes.

All but the news is publicly run in Canada. Private prisons are a horrific idea. Private healthcare has worked in other countries where the health of the nation takes precedence. But public healthcare is more accessible for everyone. Can’t get better than FREE. It’s saved my life a few times now.

I think the biggest question is how, in a single payer system, do you keep doctor salaries structured so the best doctors are on the high end? You can't just pay them all the same or it will diminish motivation.

Fire fighting was once private. You had to join a fire assurance organization in advance or they will not come out and fight your fire. We eventually realized how ridiculous that was. That your neighbors fire was a threat to your own safety. I don't understand why we can't extend that metaphor
