So sad that Telegram has a bad reputation in the West. It's *by far* the best UI/UX messenger out there. WhatsApp doesn't even come close (although I love the fact that it runs on the BEAM).

For me there 2 are in different leagues. Telegram is not end to end encryption so it cannot replace Signal/Whatsapp. Perfect for various bots, discord/IRC replacement, but not Signal or Whatsapp.

e2e encryption comes at a cost of usability, and in Telegram it does exist since day 1, I think, you only need to explicitly start e2e-encrypted chats

I’ve tried to find a cross platform messaging and calling app for the kids to use, and Telegram actually came pretty close to being a good option because I didn’t find any feed of random content in it. It fell on that you need to pay to be able to limit who can contact you.

No, it's really bad for kids. They can be randomly invited to channels too, get spam messages and telegram itself runs various promos...

Signal is sadly also limited by this setting, it’s just all or nothing. It’s actually quite impressive how there are no large established options for kids.

And even then The spam still comes through.. and kids can search unrestricted for certain materials you may not want them to get. Try it.

It's a hard world for kids out there and it puts parents in a hard position and honestly drives a small -- but not insurmountable -- wedge between them as their kids feel like they're going to miss out and parents have to either relent or feel like the odd ones out, even though they really aren't.

What sort of spam? For example, I'm being added to groups without permission sometimes, but it's only because I didn't disallow that in the privacy settings (I'm fine with opting out). Spam in groups can be handled with spam watching bots. Other than that, I'm not seeing spam in Telegram.
