Journalism malpractice you pathetic rag. It’s not “some food service workers” It’s everyone who spent even 1 day working in any capacity in service industry knows to be true. Ambiguity is not a journalistic principle

Yes I was a food server and it literally means there’s no more of a certain menu item. “The minestrone soup is 86” 86 47 means to get him out of office, not try to kill him.

86 is also used in journalism and while your at in NBC please follow up with a story on how Trump and his DOJ are harassing political enemies with frivolous charges. This case is BS and will get thrown out. You know that.

When you 86 an item from the menu, it means it has run out and is no longer available. It does not mean that you try and kill the food you're serving.

86 is jargon, meaning in general: to cancel, discard, or otherwise nullify, common across many professions, always with the same meaning. The Grand Jury was wrong to advance this.

"Tell me you're an out of touch elitist douchebag who's never worked a service job or ever known a single person who has, without telling me you're an out of touch elitist douchebag who's never worked a service job or ever known a single person who has"

This is just about getting the perp walk, so that Blanche looks good to get the job full-time. Hopefully Blanche gets disbarred in future 🙄

Yes, those of us in the Restaurant industry know the term quite well. It means we no longer have them. An item has been 86’d or removed from the menu. Most software packages even refer to the items as 86’d or have an option to 86 an item.

When will disbarment happen for repeatedly indicting people based on false claims? Taxpayer money is paying for this. You can't keep throwing money away based on vindictive prosecution.

As ridiculous as Trump indictment of Comey is, I gotta say this quote from the article is both apropos & very New York: “If the chef didn’t like” how a dish came out, “he’d say 86 it, meaning make it disappear.” Let’s crush it in the midterms & make Trump irrelevant, until he finally disappears.

It absolutely comes from food service. It's rhyming slang for "nix." It simply means "get rid of." Take an item off the menu because we've run out; or, get rid of a problem customer--NOT by killing them. 1975 slang dictionary:

Jesse WATTERS threatens to execute the Queen of England: “So we're sitting down, and there's the Queen, and I go, 'How was the beehive?'" . . And she says, 'I'm glad nobody was stung.' And I said, 'You know what they say here in D.C., if the beestings won't get you, then the guns will."

Everyone knows this, even the lying petty pedophile. This is malicious prosecution. Retaliation. Maybe once the base realizes they are paying for his incompetence they’ll smarten up. Doubt it. They’ve no critical thinking skills & if it isn’t in the MAGAt memo or talking points it doesn’t exist

Yep. Rewind 30 years when I was tending bar at Chili's. It's Friday night and I hear a yell from the back of the house, "WE'RE 86 ON QUESO!!!!"...and I am not dead because I have to tell people that we are OUT of queso.

Yes it’s annoying and stupid, but the bright spot is that Todd had to go up there and defend it discarding any last remanent of self respect he might have possessed. They won’t be here forever and he will face sanctions for his law license. So that’s delicious.

It’s a phrase that originated with evacuating customers (namely speakeasy customers from Chumley’s Bar on 86 Bedford St.), which colorfully came to mean bum’s-rushing a bum out the door.

Anyone who has actually ever work a job knows it means we ran out of an item in the kitchen so take the item off the menu “the steak special is 86’d”. This is absolutely absurd. Trump reposted images of Biden bound and gaged in a truck. F off with this BS

Damn you, NBC! You are supposeed to be journalists, not craven lickspittles! "Some food service workers say..." THE DICTIONARY AND THESAURUS SAY IT, TOO!! IT IS A DEMONSTRABLE FACT! GROW SPINES! bsky.app/profile/kevt...

"86 potstickers!" When Jack heard this, a switch went off in his brain, and his training instincts kicked in. No longer was this a simple lunch at Friday's. It was about to become a war-zone.

What a bunch of yes men licking at the orange guys boots. Someone need to tell him get over it and start acting like an adult instead of spoiled rotten child. I can imagine him rolling round the floor with his diaper on pounding the ground yelling at someone to punish the people who were critical

Please! EVERYONE with a functioning cerebral cortex knows that 86 was not used as a solicitation of violence. This is Trump using the DoJ as his personal law firm, and Donald has always been very, VERY litigious.

Yes. They use term when a food item runs out When I was still a drinking gal I got 86’d from a bar or two 🤦‍♀️ so it also means “ousted” from a place. There is nothing threatening about either! This whole case is another bogus case of distraction from #TrumpTraitor Fascism and Pedophilia.

To 86 something is common lingo. It basically means to get rid of. It an be made to mean specific ways of getting rid of, but without additional context around it there is no way to say of it specifies something that would cause harm or not.

Federal prosecutors should interview Trump as to the murders he has heard discussed with reference to "86". It doesn't seem to be used in any gangster films, so assuming Trump was involved in arranging murder(s) is not a big stretch.

This is the 3rd possible origin of 86 that I have read. The other two are; 86th street in Chicago was where beer was dumped in prohibition, and a fancy NY restaurant that did not have a table 86 would use it as subtle slang in front of customers

"Some" food service workers?!!! That has been around for literally decades! I was a waiter back in the late '70s and, when we were out of a menu item, the kitchen would literally tell us, "86 the baked potatoes." That meant we were out. Where the fuck has this NBC person lived all their life?!!

In gangster lingo it does mean to nix someone, to the rest of the world it means to evict or remove from the building/property. Trump telling on himself again thru thin skinned reactions.

It is everyday lingo. My professor said in the criminal world it means to “knock off…..”, but I feel like that is made up because I have never heard that and I’m old….. just like his assassination attempts…. Made up.

Apparently ''86'' has been around since the 1930's & is still common usage in the restaurant industry. It is used by kitchen staff when an item is no longer available & by waiting staff to indicate an item be removed from the menu, to refuse service to a customer or have them leave the premises.

Because it is... '86' is a common term used in the food service industry. Has been and still is... Trump, #MAGA and his sycophants are America's cancer. Freedom is being destroyed for profit.

You spent the whole article on the origins of the term “86” and never once mention the violent rhetoric the right spews everyday. How hundreds of people had signs that said “hang Mike Pence” and erected a scaffold with a noose on Jan 6. Get real NBC, you hoping Ellison buys you next?
