Hell of a Freudian slip. I *assume* he was thinking of the Baader-Meinhof Gang, a far-left terrorist group. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a legendary and rightly celebrated anti-Nazi theologian & dissident.

Rep. Brandon Gill: "We particularly need the left to tone down the rhetoric ... somebody is gonna listen and believe they are the next Dietrich Bonhoeffer and act on that and that's what we're seeing here."

It looks bad, but I don’t think he misspoke. He said “believe they’re Dietrich Bonhoeffer”, implication being that they’re not good like Bonhoeffer, they have delusions.

I guess you said as much. bsky.app/profile/norm.... I had forgotten Operation Valkyrie was the name.

Or I guess maybe he’s referencing Bonhoeffer’s links to Operation Valkyrie and saying someone targeting Trump might imagine themselves similarly justified, but be wrong? Still a weird choice of comparison.

And either way, I think the reference is to the fact that Bonhoeffer was arrested for being part of a plot to kill Hitler, which seems to fit the context.

I would not make that assumption.

Having watched a rather painful number of Gill's committee hearing questionings, I feel confident the number of mutilated corpses the authorities one day find on his property will not be zero.

the unspoken part of this is wild: the current political moment is so warped that 'who opposed the Nazis' is now considered an *insult*. Bonhoeffer's just a guy who stood up to fascism and they're using his name like a slur. history is a flat circle and it's spinning the wrong way

I think it is a slip, but not that he mentioned the wrong guy/group, he just forgot that "guy who opposed the Nazis and was involved in the plot to assassinate Hitler" isn't someone most people would consider to be a bad guy.

I think he means someone’s going to get a messiah complex and attempt to assassinate Trump, thinking (incorrectly) they are a Bonhoeffer, not a John Wilkes Booth—and that Trump is a Hitler not a Lincoln.

(And “links” is generous here. Popular mythology sometimes makes Bonoeffer a “plotter” but he was jailed more than a year before the attempt and can’t really have had much in the way of direct operational involvement.)

Ah, OK, I get it. Apparently Christian nationalist grifter Eric Metaxas wrote a popular but dodgy biography of Bonhoeffer that tries to conscript him as a kind of icon to justify political violence against Democrats. So this is pure projection.

Yes he was certainly not linked to Operation Valkyrie as such but was a member of the wider resistance circle which did eventually implement it and his execution was due to that connection and not his earlier actions against the Nazi Gleichschaltung of German Protestantism.

I think this is probably it - referencing Bonhoeffer's link to the Abwehr and (incorrectly, imho) tying him to the assassination attempt on Hitler. This is a pretty discredited theory, but if I'm remembering correctly, it figures prominently in Metaxes's extremely bad biography of Bonhoeffer.

I think to believe Gill knows about the Red Army Faction is giving to much credit to his level of intelligence and historical knowledge. He really just thinks being anti-Nazi is bad.
