To be fair there were definitely MANY articles written about it back in the day when Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol (for seven years and, like, a dozen studio albums) and started performing with the word slave written on his face. That did not go unnoticed.

Go Taylor, but geez she is not the pioneer in this fight, as seen in the comments. Do young journalists learn how to research anymore? Then this crap gets published, AI farms it, and the cycle of ignorance intensifies.

Where are the editors? There was life on earth before the writer graduated high school. I don’t care if the author of this piece is young. Maybe research a tiny bit before you write an article. Taylor Swift isn’t some pioneer for artist autonomy. Far from it! Start with Sinatra and Ray Charles.

It's an important issue but it was Prince who brought this issue into the mainstream, first. At least be factual. Although Swift is helping the cause of artists owning their masters and that's noteworthy.

I’m-a let you finish, but seriously… Have you never heard of Prince? MC Hammer? Prince freaking changed his name to a symbol to protest not owning his masters. And no disrespect to Taylor Swift’s generic music, but Prince’s music was actually unique and brilliant. Do better, NPR.

She's not wrong for wanting to have her masters, but at some point there was a contract signed that specified who gets what, and she signed it, likely with a lawyer nearby. That said, it IS shitty that record companies hold artists hostage like that. It's a shit business. Source: I lived it.
