If you are a freelancer you need to know what happened to me and be ready for it. Two years after being sued, four years after the article was published, I am owed over $200,000 by the Plaintiff & have gotten nothing. How to you keep reporting after this? colleenmondor.substack.com/p/58-i-am-th...

colleenmondor.substack.com#58: I am the cautionary tale that freelancers need to hearIt’s been two years since I was sued for an article, I’ve won twice but it’s still not over.

Alaska is on track to get a Democratic governor.

Ivan Moore@alaskasurvey.bsky.social

Q: Rank the following candidates for Alaska governor in the numerical order of your preference. You do not need to rank all the candidates. Click only one box in each row and in each column. Round 1 JKT 50.7 (49.9) Wilson 30.6 (29.9) Bronson 12.1 (12.3) Taylor 6.6 (7.9) 🧵9/11

Meanwhile, in Alaska....

Through 1:30 p.m. today, Alaska is up to 7.6% voter turnout, with 46,403 early and absentee votes recorded by the Alaska Division of Elections. If current trends continue, the state will be near the record early voting turnout of 2024. #akleg

This NTSB Board retirement flew way under the radar. He left the agency in early October - even though he was confirmed in May for another 5 years. Three members gone in just over a year. To say such upheaval at the NTSB is unprecedented is a vast understatement. avweb.com/flight-safet...

avweb.comNTSB Vice Chairman Graham RetiringGraham's NTSB departure would leave the five-member safety board with three members unless another member is seated before Oct. 2.

I think a lot of people outside of Alaska have forgotten that Daniel J. Sullivan is a real person. From the latest @alaska.bsky.social article on the election, this quote is a good reminder of how hard it has been on him simply to run under his own name. FYI - there are 9 Dan Sullivans in AK.

This article was obviously written to make NTSB Chair Homendy look good. It's not about anyone attacking her, it's about preemptively stating that anyone who suggests she has allowed politics to infiltrate the NTSB is wrong & aligned with political extremists. nypost.com/2026/10/26/u...

In the midst of everything else, aviation media seems to be missing this topic or, it's too sticky to get into. I'm submitting FOIAs on several areas of interest & intend to learn a lot more. The NTSB is an incredibly important & respected government institution. I'm not done writing about this.

Just put down a deposit on a puppy. I must admit, when we saw the shelter had named him "Moose", we thought it was meant to be. (Alaskans will understand - we are Outside and adopting in WA State, so finding an AK-themed dog seemed perfect.) We will see him & hopefully take him with us on Friday.

If you are looking for NF book recs from someone who reviews NF professionally for the American Library Assoc (me!), note this thread. I just added a few more books & will be updating it on a more regular basis from now on. I will be reaching back for older books often, along with new releases.

A discussion developed here yesterday on the 1958 plan to detonate SIX nuclear bombs off the coast of AK & develop a harbor. The plan was stopped by AK Natives & others & Dan O'Neill tells the story is his book THE FIRECRACKER BOYS which I highly recommend. www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/dan-o...

It is not just that people need baseball, it is the type of baseball being played. The Brewers are making plans and executing them. They aren’t deterred by assaults or mistakes. They keep their eyes on the ball. They get in their opponents’ heads and make them crack. You might call it metaphor.

Sir, our democracy is under attack. Please focus. Thank you.

This thread comes to a close... ... as we now have a final result. Let the records show that, with 92% of the vote countywide, Lula is up 3.3%. (Can he end up doubling his 2022 margin?)

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Something being missed in the AK election discourse is how significant local media is in the state. People listen to public radio, consume the newspapers & AK produced & staffed news sites, etc. This is a small population state & local media is very relevant. Alaskans want to know what’s going on.

Getting kind of old: it's looking increasingly likely that next week Typhoon Champi will become the fourth (ex) typhoon in past 10 weeks to track into the Alaska portion of the Bering Sea: already Bang-Lang in August, Dujuan in September and Choi-wan in early October. #akwx

A strong Bering Sea storm knocked out power, canceled flights and prompted at least one evacuation in Western Alaska communities on Friday. A blizzard warning remains in effect for the Seward Peninsula and most of the Northwest Arctic Borough into Saturday morning.

An art historical gloss: for those who don't know, Guernica was held by MoMA in NYC for more than 40 years, as Picasso stipulated the painting should not return to Spain while Franco was still in power. It was finally unstretched, rolled up & sent back to Spain in 1981, as shown in this video

This new electoral vídeo from Pedro Sánchez is quite something. Standing in front of Guernica defending the anti-war stance of his government, limiting military expenditure, denouncing the atrocity of Gaza. English subtitles.

We should incessantly remind people of our own revolutionary history, that when soldiers shot people during the Boston Massacre, they were prosecuted locally with no sovereign immunity invoked to protect them from homicide charges. bsky.app/profile/nath...

On 250th anniversary of US Revolution, we need to talk incessantly about Boston Massacre. Where 200 colonists threw ice, sticks & stones at the King's soldiers who then killed colonists The soldiers had no immunity, but were tried under Boston province law. /1 www.battlefields.org/learn/articl....

OK, new photo and a new analysis of today's Alaska US Senate lawsuit, with an explanation that the case only has binding power in the scenario where Peltola wins by a margin that's smaller than the number of first-choice votes received by Dan J. Sullivan: alaskabeacon.com/2026/10/23/t...

Palantir, of course, has an AI contract for Air Traffic Control. I guess they are going to make it more manly.

“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men. We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”

Just follow @alaska.bsky.social on the Dan Sullivans/DOJ issue. He has been covering it from the beginning, he knows all things election-wise in Alaska and really, he's the guy. The WaPo, NYT and everybody else are never going to know it as well as James.

James Brooks Cascade@alaska.bsky.social

Something I think is important, that other folks have tended to skip over ... the DOJ argument relies on the effect of hypothetical confused voters, but Alaska uses ranked choice voting, and confusion wouldn't disenfranchise anyone. They could simply rank both Sullivans without a problem.

Colleen Mondor reposted

My take at Cato on why DOJ's lawsuit against Alaska is borderline frivolous, abusive, contemptuous of federalism and more. "In the aftermath of the 2020 election, courts made clear that they would not allow meritless litigation to steal an election. They may soon have to make that clear again."
