This is outrageous, and it is abuse. Period. That district’s special education department needs a top-down overhaul STAT. Those responsible in any way for this need to be on the business end of a civil suit with hefty punitive damages.

Damn, would be one thing if it were a closet or bathroom but they too the time to build these things knowing the whole time what their use was.

I have never heard about an entire faculty being fired in one fell swoop but this might be cause for a first time. Not one faculty member who knew these boxes existed can be retained right down to the janitor. It is that bad.

What goes through someone’s minds to do this? What level of subsistence capitalism do we operate on where (probably) untrained, overworked and underpaid caretakers resort to this?

I have no idea! Does this happen with credentialed caretakers? Is there a review process that enforces ethical behavior among credentialees? Does that credentialing strongly affect employability or institutional legitimacy?

It started w the genocide of Indigenous peoples. Moved onto Salem Witch Hunts, Slavery, KKK, Jim Crow. So this heinous crime is on par. I merely meant: have we, some 200 fucking years later, no decency as a country.

This is deeply sad; I know that area, and it’s both poor and isolated. Having worked in education, I think that classroom management has become impossible under current conditions, and teachers are making bad decisions. More parents, rich and poor, need to go to schools to see the conditions.
