First read book of the year! 📚 Out of The Silent Planet by C. S. Lewis Having only read Narnia before, it was interesting to read something Lewis wrote of a different genre & for an adult audience. Beautiful prose, unsurprisingly, and definitely plan to check out the other two books in the series.

been lagging a bit on reading and also doing multiple books at once, but Book #2 finished! The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien figured since I finally watched LotR and just read some Lewis, it’d be a good pick What I learned: 1. Gandalf fixes everything 2. Bombur is fat

Book #3! God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. This is the 3rd Vonnegut novel I’ve read recently, and it’s very charming as is his style. Multiple characters apparently make their way into some of his other novels, so looking forward to seeing them pop up!

Book #4 House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski been working on this off & on for 3+ months now Such an important origin of modern & internet horror, and the horror at the core of it is phenomenal. A feat of publishing, too. Gave me one major nightmare lol glad I read it, glad to be done with it

I just read this one a few months back. It's the only book that made me feel like i was going insane in parts reading it. So amazing (i do not want to reread it)

Book #5 A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami My 7th Murakami I’ve read and had a blast with it. Maybe the most fun I’ve had reading a book of his, it is rather fast-paced, noir-y and just a good time. Did not realize it’s the 3rd of a trilogy tho, so will need to go back and read the first two.

My favorite book, always glad when I see someone give it a go. Did you find the check mark?

Such a phenomenally creepy book! Was reading it while also playing Killer 7, and had to put the game away for later, because I was getting messed up. 😬

I’m slowly going through his works, read 4 of his novels so far. Cat’s Cradle’s ending stands out in my mind as one of the best of anything. I think it’s tied with Sirens of Titan for my fave of his I’ve read so far, but it’s also been over a decade since I read Slaughterhouse.

My main memory of this book is still just Gandalf inviting person after person into Bilbo's home while he just goes "oh geez oh no please stop oh geez" which i gotta hand it to Tolkien, comedy gold

the hobbit was the first grown-up book I read, when I was 10. I was dismayed to learn it was written for 9 year olds. very literate ones. my favorite moment is when gandalf shows up after being gone for a while and refuses to explain where he was until after he’s done blowing smoke rings.

I read Silent Planet because of your suggestion and loved it! Just finished Perelandra and started That Hideous Strength last night. Lewis came up with some incredible ideas for the populations and geography of Mars and Venus. So cool!

Late to the party on your book thread but I had a similar response to out of the silent planet, then tried the second one (perelandra) and it's basically a man explaining things to a woman - that most inscrutible and confounding of creatures - for 200+ pages lol. I couldn't get through it.

i really did love the first one and the otter people. the sexy naked lady who is still pure and falls to no temptation was weird but i finished it. the third one i never really made it through tho i don't know if it's bad or i just didn't want to read it

You can kinda feel he isn't at his best just yet with this book. BUT. If do read the other two, you'll follow him as he grows as a writer, which was a pretty cool experience. Second book is another Journey with Ransom. Third book completely explodes the narrative framework.

Yes he was quite prolific, especially a lot of non-fiction Christianity texts. I think this series is particularly interesting since, it taking place on another planet, it's very exploratory in ideas of philosophy and spirituality and society.

Out of the Silent Planet made a lot more sense to me when I learned that the three species of Mars represent the three parts of the soul according to Plato. It’s a fascinating idea for a sci fi story!

You know I have this on my bookshelf and have been meaning to read it for years. I have a buddy of mine who told me some crazy stuff that happens in there.
